Sometimes it seems that too much happens at the same time, or nearly.
May 27, 2010, Alexei Kondratiev dropped dead on the street, apparently of a heart attack. He was a longtime HP, linguistic scholar, Celtic historian. I met him once during a three-day retreat and was amazed at the little bit I heard him say, and the great and gentle care he took of his life partner who was experiencing some physical and mobility challenges. He was 60.
August 12, 2010, Isaac Bonewits died, surrounded by friends and family, of colon cancer. He was the first and so far only person to receive a degree in Magic from the University of California, the founder of a major organization in American Druidry, prolific author and public speaker, professional iconoclast. I met him on several occasions where we joined in discussions of thirty or forty people, but we never managed a private or personal conversation. The last time I saw him, just a few months ago, I remember thinking 'he looks awfully tired' -- and shortly thereafter heard of his diagnosis. He, too, was just 60.
I'm finding it a bit hard to take in the loss of these two major Pagan figures in such a short time, at such a young age (relatively speaking).
May their journeys in the Summerlands be gentle and fulfilling. May those who grieve their loss be comforted. May they return to us again and be once again recognized for Who they are.
So mote it be.
