A week's adventures

Chronicling a flight north from California, an Ashland adventure, and the Bellingham Juggling Festival.

Flight North:

I finished work in L.A. and departed for Portland with a friendly Craigslist rider named J.C. on board. Noticed for the first time that there's a good climbing tree at the Porterville airport, the one with the restaurant featuring a jazz pianist. Spent the night under the stars in Corning. After a fuel stop in Red Bluff, we continued to Hillsboro, blessed with blue skies and tailwinds throughout. I was pleased to enjoy a fun dinner with the parents of a childhood friend whom I hadn't seen in more than a decade.

Ashland Adventure:

heidi_girl, Perkee, and I embarked on a trip to Ashland to see two plays: William Shakespeare's "As You Like It" and August Wilson's "Gem of The Ocean." We stayed with the aforementioned childhood friend, who is living on a beautiful (albeit non-working) organic walnut farm in Talent. Leaving in the morning, we rode the giant zip line at the Out 'n About Treesort near Cave Junction before driving back to Ashland, seeing the second play, and flying home. It was a wonderful trip despite packing three days into two, though it would have been wonderful to have had more time to relax on the farm, or with nature in general. heidi_girl is a wonderfully collaborative, authentic, insightful, and open-minded person whom I'm very glad to trust as a friend.

Bellingham Juggling Festival:

Immediately upon arrival in Bellingham -- later than we'd planned due to my failure to account for Friday-evening traffic -- I drove Amiel to the Bellingham Airport in time for his flight en route to Fairbanks to meet up with chaostraveler for the drive back from Alaska. After a fun game of Apples to Apples at chemgopher's party, she and I caught the "Renegade" juggling show that night. I came back to Everett in the morning to meet up with Ardea, who arrived on a flight from Ohio for the start of her week back in the Northwest. Returning to Bellingham, we saw an impressive public juggling show together on Saturday before she went back to Port Townsend to spend time with her grandmother and friends. After Folklife, Ardea will return to Boston, where her boyfriend Oliver lives, and she'll go to work cooking at a nearby folk dancing camp in Plymouth.

I also had dinner with my stepfather, Terry, while in Bellingham. It was lovely to catch up with him, and I think that he and my mother are likely to have plenty of fun together once they've moved into town.

What a crazy week! It's time to get to work...
