Author's Notes: My second DW fic, written for the Five First Sentences challenge on Time and Chips-
aibhinn 's sentence. Not as glorious as "The Universe in Gallifreyan" I'm afraid (TUiG was my third.). Also a reminder why I like writing about stars, and why I don't like writing about people. But as usual, Ninth and Doctor/Rose are irresistible.

There was nothing like the birth of a star to make one feel insignificant. From unfathomable distances swirls and tendrils of softly glowing gas spiraled inward, flowing around and past Rose before pouring over an unseen edge and coalescing within a frothing maelstrom. She tilted her head upward; more dust and gas cascaded over her face and hair but didn’t bother to touch her. The silence was impassive and absolute, a single dark entity that leaned through her, past her to watch the birth of nobility.

A spark. A sudden note in the silence.

A swelling crescendo of light, louder and brighter and it made no difference whether she had her eyes open or closed or covered with her hands, it seared a fierce pure white that bleached the cold silence and threatened to obliterate her as well-

The light died to a hum in the background

Rose saw bruises on the back of her eyelids, an angry red and purple that matched the ringing in her ears. There was a wash of cool blue light, and her vision cleared.

When she opened her eyes, she wondered what light could outshine the compassionate darkness the Doctor’s gaze seemed to hold.

“So how ‘bout that, Rose? A cute little yellow dwarf, not too temperamental, just a touch cooler than average but perfect for your little planet. Now tell me that any of you silly little apes can give the Earth a better present.” He folded his arms with a self-important grin.

“You’re telling me you’re so impressive, you made a star?” Rose laughed at him. The Doctor felt the universe still to listen to her joy, and wondered what took it so long to notice.

Far away from red grasses and silver leaves, he basked in the light of two suns.
