Resources for Walking Information
I’ll keep this list brief, and have a few different posts about this:
http://www.walkable.org/index.html http://www.walklive.org/ So many places in the US encourage very little in the way of actual walkability!
I think if people had access to safe, viable walking neighborhoods, and general urban planning scaled down to an easier mix of walking/biking/public transit for commuting to work, we would be healthier as a society.
I walked 8 blocks today.
Some notes on downtown Santa Rosa, California:
Walkable positives: You can get to a variety of restaurants downtown. There are some very good activities available within 6 blocks of the core downtown area, and 3-4 places a tourist and even a native would find of interest- the home of Luther Burbank, the Sonoma County Museum, and slightly off the beaten path, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum.
Ripley’s I have been to once.
I actually was a docent at the Luther Burbank house a while-a looong time ago! And for a short time I worked at the Sonoma County Museum.
I need to rectify the fact that I’ve not been to these places for a while. Ripley’s I will skip however.
Walkable negatives: There is no practicable, practical mix of drugstore, grocery, market, etc. Library is closed I believe half a day once or twice, and might be closed a whole day, I will look into it.
I know one thing for sure-- rent is skyhigh and has genuinely moved some very good businesses out of town that helped make Santa Rosa what it was.
Also, the sidewalks need repair “around” the downtown core.
I will of course post more with more information later.
