Yesterday my boss said to me, "I'm so glad you're here" and "I'm so glad you're working on this project". Just now a collaborator rang me from LAX (on his way to Indonesia) to discuss the project, and said that "We're so excited to be working with you on this" and that the guy I have been working with in Florida "said he's so happy to have you working on the project because you have a sense of humour AND you're smart".
I cannot stress how much this contrasts my own view of myself, particularly over the months I've been in the US. I have felt totally incompetent and useless. In fact, my first reaction to their praise was to be offended at their sarcasm. But perhaps, just perhaps, they meant it. I think I'll believe that for now.
