Greetings to the Barony.
Last night there was a small meeting to discuss having a demo at the
Caponi Art park in Eagan on September 29th. Lady Ellen was unable to
attend and asked that I lead the discussion. Here is what was discussed.
1) The Barony has participated in a Demo at the Caponi Art Park for
several years. We were originally approached by the owners of the park
to provide "color" for their Shakespeare weekend. In the past this
weekend has fallen on the final weekend in July or the first weekend in
August. The last 2 years this was the hottest weekend of the year. The
Shakespeare performers decided to move their dates to mid June.
Because of the proximity to Lilies and Schutzenfest, the Barony felt that we
would not be able to provide adequate numbers for a demo so we will not
be participating with the Shakespeare weekend (June 15-16) this year.
2) I decided to contact Cheryl Caponi to see what she thought of the
SCA having our own weekend later in the summer. Considering the
numbers of people who came to visit with us when it was 105 degrees, it was
my argument there was enough draw to warrent a weekend on our own.
Cheryl agreed. I suggested September 29th as a possible date and she
thought it sounded good. I communicated this discussion to TE's and Ellen
(along with a number of regulars who have provided key aspects of the
demo in the past). At the Wednesday meeting last night there was an
informal discussion about this plan.
3) Currently this date conflicts with one event on the Kingdom
Calendar (Windhaven's 30th Anniversary). It is also the final weekend of the
Renaissance festival, which means that we would loose the presence of a
number of musicians and dancers because they would be performing in
Shakopee that day. During the discussion last night most agreed that,
while unfortunate to not have the musicians, it was not a make or break to
keep this proposal from going through. Everyone at the meeting last
night thought this was a good idea and thought the date was good.
4) The business meeting for the Barony will be on Wednesday May 16th
and there will be a vote to see if Nordskogen will sponsor this demo. A
demo needs sponsorship by a group to be covered under the SCA
insurance. I will be unable to attend this meeting (due to packing for Quest)
but I will be happy to answer questions prior to the meeting.
5) Currently there are plans to have the same activities as we have
had for the past several years: rapier, armored combat, cooking, period
tents, musicians and dancers, fiber arts, craft display, heraldic
display, and people in garb speaking to visitors. The only difference is
that we hope to do all of these activities when it is not 105 degrees
out. Of course, we could have snow....a tornado.....flood......it is
Minnesota.
If you have participated in the past, please consider coming again.
There will be announcements in the Quill and on the Nordskogen Hall as
well as the Wednesday meetings and Tuesday fighter practice regarding
the demo as the date approaches. If you have not participated in the
past and would like to know what a demo is, or how you can participate
please let me know.
Thank you.
