What a heartbreaking situation to be in, but Emil's compassionate thoughts towards his rival are very sweet.

I think the part that I like the best of this is that even if one of them succeeded - they'd try to comfort the one who lost. There's something really sweet about that; that it isn't an antagonistic rivalry.
