First meal from 2008 seeding

May 05, 2008 08:06

Last night's dinner was stir-fried vegetables, mostly from the garden. Nothing unusual about that, except it was the first harvest from this year's plantings: the bok choy and Michihli cabbage seeded in February, set out in March, is now mature. Predictably, it is trying to bolt, so we'll have to eat it up quickly. Favas are also coming on strong ( Read more... )

We have two small cauliflowers already, and are harvesting spinach hand-over-fist. the corn is a few inches high, as are the peas and beans. Everything else is coming along a bit slowly.

Aw, why didn't you stop by? We're only 15 minutes off Highway 1. Maybe next time? Lot of awesome birds here. :)

Aww :)

We were driving from Rio Dell to the bay area, via hwy 1, turning away from 101 at Leggett. That's quite a drive. :)

If you came south from Leggett on Hwy 1 and continued past Fort Bragg, Mendocino, and Albion, you went less than a mile from my house. (As the raven flies; it's a 15-minute drive, because of topography.) If you kept going on 1 all that way to Tomales, yeah, that's quite a drive!

Well, we turned back in at 128, just for the sake of speed and that we were both getting a little tummy-tender after that long drive. Also, there was the Anderson Valley Brewery to see, but their last tour was at 3 pm. *sigh*

They're going to build a walmart and starbucks on the same corner as the brewery. The mind boggles.

Hm... a Mall-Wart in Boonville? I'm skeptical... but maybe they think they'll capture the coastal market. Certainly not enough population in AV to support one. Guess I need to re-subscribe to the AVA to keep up on the gossip.

My favorite woodpecker. :)

The only evidence I have is that on the NW corner of 128 and where ever the brewery is, there is a brewery. On the NE corner is a sign that says "Future Home of Walmart and Starbucks." I wish I'd taken a picture.

Oh, I think that's a Mendocino joke. Maybe I'll ask around and see if anybody knows the story...

It's been a cold spring. My peas are also only a few inches high, and the only beans I've dared plant are runner beans, most of which got eaten up by the pill bugs, and the survivors haven't grown much yet. OTOH the cold is probably the reason I could get bok choy and Chinese cabbage to mature at all (normally it just bolts right off if I plant in spring).

My purple cauliflower seems to like the cold. It's the healthiest-looking thing in the plot, besides the three-year-old strawberries.

I need to split that strawberry plant. Anyone know if I should do it now or wait until after harvest time?
