How will new arts push affect Dreyfoos school?
As a student in my junior year at Dreyfoos School of the Arts I felt a sort of emotion I had not expected when I read the article "2 high schools to get arts curricula" (Jan. 24). The fact that other schools and other students are going to be able to share in the wonderful arts education I am lucky to receive daily does nothing but encourage us to keep fighting for the same cause. But I had to contemplate the situation.
At a time when budget cuts and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test seem to rule the roost, we are constantly being told that our arts education is not going to be fully financed. When I read that both Santaluces and Boynton Beach high schools were being granted more than $10 million to start new programs, I thought, "What about us?"
Call it the kid inside of me, but is it really possible for more arts programs to ignite and strive while our school fights every year to save our seventh-hour financing? Recently, we have been told that it is also possible that our school will lose eight art teachers if financing is not increased. Santaluces and Boynton Beach high schools rightfully may succeed in their efforts; we will continue to fight.
What will become of our competitive arts programs? What is being done to prevent the lack of financing? Will opening these new programs significantly hurt us? What can we as students, but, more important, artists do to be heard? These questions are being asked. Now, we want answers.
