crazy catholics and programming children

in the catholic faith, today is good friday. it is the day that jesus was punished by pontius pilate and crucified by the romans (not the jews, like some people *cough*melgibson*cough* seem to believe - read your bible, son). traditionally, between the hours of noon and three is meant to be the time that jesus died on the cross. during these hours, many catholics go to church and read through the passion and stations of the cross. many catholic churches stay open into the evening for those looking to practice the sacrament of reconciliation, or the sacrament of forgiveness. in other words, people go into boxes and gloat to a priest behind a screen about all the cool things they did! :)

i was not one of these catholics. i drove, during these hours, i talked and had lunch with damneddonkey, i listened to the radio, and i also worked. i do have plans on going to church on sunday. if i'm going to be a christmas-easter catholic, i'd like to at least be committed in my efforts.

lunch with damneddonkey was lovely. we met at the local teppanyaki restaurant and enjoyed a meal of nicely cooked shrimp, chicken and steak (they were having a special that was just too good to pass up). we were the only ones at our table, in fact, we were practically the only ones in the restaurant. this seemed slightly odd when the chef came out to cook our lunch. they're looking to put on a show and, although it is entertaining, it just feels weird when all they've got of an audience is you. anyway, the chef was nice and quite fond of making raver noises. paul and i chatted about all kinds of stuff. i enjoyed myself and i hope he did, too. :)

BFF-sarah (aka bonita_applebom joined me later in the afternoon at my hair appointment. she's looking for a new hair stylist and i highly recommend mine. i've never been disappointed with my haircuts and she's super fun and funny. i also like the salon: it's funky and the exact opposite of stuffy. it's totally not what my previous hair salon was like. sarah seemed to like what my stylist recommended for her hair and some ideas of how to cut it, so much so that she set up an appointment for this weekend. :D

while work has been slow, school work has picked up. on thursday, my children's programming class met in our virtual classroom to watch and present each other's storytime videos. half the class signed up for that night (i was put in that day because i didn't indicate which day i wanted to go - sorry if i didn't see the link to the forum about this!). in the end, i'm glad i presented on thursday. i got it out of the way. i didn't try to do quite nearly as much as some of my other classmates did with their videos. i picked a story and i read it. i didn't integrate songs or dancing segments, just the story. i wish i had at least attempted to include one of these things, but i think i was just trying to get my niece and nephew to sit down and listen to me read while i taped it. everyone liked the story i chose and i got lots of compliments on my diction and cadence. my teacher even asked me how many times i had practiced reading the book before taping it. i think i read the story no more than 3 times before reading it for the video. she said that it sounded like a hard book to learn to read and commended me on a job well done. she also complimented me on my ability to acknowledge and answer questions from my audience (my nephew naturally asked a question towards the end), it also showed that i had engaged my audience, as they were paying attention enough to the story to ask questions about it. anyway, i'm done with it and looking forward to my other assignments for this class.

i'm working on my next assignment right now, or at least i was and i'm taking a break from it. i have to come up with a 12-month library program for the children's section of the library. so far, i've gone through and gave each month a theme. in addition, i will have to include an early literacy program for parents, my workshops are called "family literacy workshops" and usually coincide loosely with the monthly theme. i also have to include a monthly budget (including a line-item budget for activities and supplies) and considerations for library collections and possible funding from outside the library. for only worth 15 points, this is a really large assignment. i'm trying to do the best i can and be as creative as i can. i'm hoping to be as simple as possible with my activities and looking to local groups and agencies for visits and performances. for example, there's a local high school which has a youth mariachi band, which would fit nicely in my month about music, same goes for looking at a visit from san jose taiko. i have a month planned for promoting healthy eating and living and might look at having a rep from whole foods or a farmer from the local farmer's market come talk about the importance of a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables. anyway, at this point of the project, i have my year planned out and just need to type it out and add in my activities and budget. i'm hoping i can get this done by tomorrow night. it's not due until next tuesday, but i have an assignment for my other class due the following monday and would like to have ample time to do that assignment. luckily, everything is spread out enough to allow at least 1 week to complete each assignment. *sigh*

i'm done may 8, or possibly sooner. if i plan my cards right, i could be done by the end of april. i am SO READY for summer...
