Today was probably one of the worst days so far. It was just a combination of everything-the freezing cold weather, my terrible cough, and the fact that I was still under the influence of drowsy medicine.
We left the hotel this morning at nine o’clock to attend a private piano concert. We reached the pianist’s house (where the concert was held) around 10 AM. The concert was really beautiful, but since the music was so soothing I was not able to keep myself awake. I kept dozing off and jerking back awake. The concert ended around noon and we took the train into the center of town to eat lunch.
I ate an egg and cheese sandwich from a pretty popular, but cheap, bakery called Anker (we found one that was located in the train station so that we wouldn’t have to go out into the cold). It was good and relatively filling. I also had some sort of pastry for desert that was essentially a croissant with custard and fruit on top. It was pretty good, but the custard should have been a little sweeter and have had a different consistency.
Then I decided to face the cold and so I roamed the city. Basically we walked around for a little bit (which included the chocolate store, where I got authentic Viennese chocolate that wasn’t nearly as good as the Swiss chocolate I was originally planning on buying, and Starbucks).
Then we had to meet back at the Vienna Opera House so that we could walk over to the Belvedere museum. This was one of the few museums that I thoroughly enjoyed because it had a lot of Austrian history in it. It contained the pistols that initiated WWI (used by the assassins of Franz Ferdinand) and the shirt that Ferdinand was wearing at the time, which is not stained with blood. It also contained some artwork by Gustauv Klimt, who painted the well-known painting “The Kiss.”
From there we went to the opera house so that we could stand in line to get the cheapest seating tickets that go on sale about 20 minutes before the show starts. I got sixth row seats that were originally about 140 euros, but once it gets close to show time they sell them for only 10 euros. I definitely slept on the floor while waiting in line for the tickets (after I went to Anker to get cheese bread for dinner-yum!).
The opera “Don Carlos” was really good, even though it was five hours of singing that I had to sit through. I do admit though that I sort of nodded off at the very beginning of the opera (I couldn’t help it… I guess I was still drowsy a little bit). The only strange thing about the opera was that the plot would randomly change time periods but would continue with the same essential plot.
From there we just took the bus straight back to the hotel-well sorta… it took us a while to find it. Today wasn’t that bad of a day, but it was just the worst one so far. Not feeling well didn’t help either. Hopefully Munich will be better….
