Today was a long day. This morning started with a music lecture about the Impressionist period. After an hour and a half of lecture (during which most people were asleep) I went to the Dachau concentration camp. It was definitely an experience. This was the first concentration camp established by the Nazi party (1933). Originally political enemies were sent there and it was meant to be a slave camp for the creation of armaments. Out of the 35,000 prisoners there before the start of WWII, only 500 were killed. Once the war started it was still considered to be a slave camp, but the death toll rose. Inside the camp I saw the barracks (where they lived), the prison (where slaves were punished), the crematory, and the memorials (that were built after the war ended and the camp was liberated).
After Dachau, we went into the city to explore. I ate lunch at a little sandwich place-I ate an Italian panini with mozzarella and tomatoes. Right after we left the restaurant we found a really nice and inexpensive bakery. Across from the bakery was a really gorgeous church called Asamkirche. The inside of the church was covered in gold. From there we headed to the Hofbrau House, the beer hall where Hitler declared the formation of the Nazi party. Now it’s just a famous beer hall. At five o’clock we went to the center of town, Marienplatz, to see the famous Munich Glockenspiel (animated clock). It was definitely overrated. It was just a carousal that is really high up on the outside of a church.
After that we took the train up to the Olympic park. The park was really pretty and really big. All of the buildings, like the stadium, the arena, and the swimming pool, had a really strange structure with Plexiglas on top. From there I took the train back to the hotel to call it an early day since I don’t feel that way (I’ve developed and ugly cough!).
But later when Scuba Steve told me that it was his birthday, and since no one else knew it was it birthday cuz he didn’t care to tell anybody, I decided that we had to take him out to dinner. We went out around ten o’clock and ate at a beer garden near Marienplatz (the center of Munich). It was a lot of fun and I got some pretty good asparagus and potato dumplings. After that we roamed around for a little bit and walked further into Marienplatz. By the time I came back it was about 1 AM.
