This morning I ate my first hotel breakfast in a long time (since I had been choosing to sleep in over eating free breakfast). It was alright, but I’ll have to make sure that I get there a little earlier in the future so I can actually have some choices. Immediately after breakfast we had an hour and a half long music lecture (in one of the conference rooms of the hotel) to prepare us for the concert that we would be going to in the evening.
After class was over, they gave us about an hour before we had to be on the bus to go into the city. Once we got to the city, we had a three hour break for lunch. We went to a restaurant that serves all types of food (burgers, burritos and quesadillas, salads, stuffed pita, and hardcore German-style meat). I had a huge baked potato that was stuffed with spinach and cheese (a little too much spinach for my liking).
Before we had left the hotel it was pretty warm and it looked as if it would stay that way the entire day. By the time we had reached Vienna there were rain clouds in the sky and the temperature had dropped a little bit, but not too much. In the middle of lunch it started pouring. Not expecting this to happen, we had sat outside under the canopy to eat lunch. The canopy was not too good at keeping the cold rain out-some of the people in my group got soaked. The rain caused the temperature to drop a bunch, but by the time we finished lunch the rain had completely stopped and it was no longer feeling quite so cold.
After lunch we decided to roam around Vienna again. I was determined to find another chocolate shop. Once I had gotten my chocolate craving taken care of, Laura and I got rid of the guys and set out to do some shopping. We first went to Zara, a department store at which I had shopped at in Madrid, and then to H & M. We ran into almost every girl from our group in H & M.
Next we had a walking tour of Vienna led by Dr. Medina (the art history professor). The tour consisted of Stephansdom (a gothic church located at the center of Vienna where we got to go up to the roof and see the skyline of the whole city), Peterskirche (which is supposed to be a smaller imitation of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome), and ended at the Secession Building. During the tour the sun came out and the city heated up so quickly (people had gone from thick jackets to summer clothing).
From there we decided to do some more shopping, since that is the best thing to do in Vienna. We stopped off first at a Starbucks (the coconut caramel was so good!!!!) and used the restroom there in the dark with a blacklight.
After we had finished our shopping we ate lunch at a sandwich stand type of place that Vienna is known for, but I ended up getting pizza even though we had just left Italy. I noticed that in Vienna they don’t have that many authentic restaurants. I find it is more similar to the United States, where there are many Chinese and Italian restaurants.
We met at Musikverein to attend a Mozart concert. By this time it had sort of started raining again and had once again become cooler. I really enjoyed the concert and the variety of Mozart that was played. Out of all the movements, two of them we my former cell phone rings. The conductor was really funny and encouraged us to participate by clapping along during certain songs.
After the concert was over it was absolutely freezing outside for the middle of June. We took the bus back to the hotel and once again spent the evening in the hotel (we watched “Mean Girls”).
