So I went to Millenicon last Saturday. Millenicon is a science fiction convention in Cincinnati about a third of the size of Marcon and is held every March. It was an easy day trip from Oxford, although I think next year I'll stay in the hotel and go all three days.
It was a lot of fun. I went to three panels - Theology and Science, Great Science Mysteries, and Steampunk Mad Science. They were all fun, but the first got a bit heated (not from me, I swear!) After my redirect question at the end, I was asked by two of the panelists to be a panelist for next year.
I also attended the Tom Smith concert (packed room - I sat in the corner) and the open filk, where I was one of three people singing. I actually ran through my entire memorized filk repertoire. To continue I would have had to break into my medieval and folk material.
Other memorable encounters - Harry Dresden was there. Men have costuming so easy - just throw on a black duster, grab a wooden staff, and you're good to go. I had dinner with a retired linguistics professor who asked me, "Have you ever heard of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz?" I kind of wrote a dissertation on her. So it was a fun dinner. I bought an anthology of wizard stories. And I discovered that Cincinnati has both a storytelling guild and a mountain dulcimer group. I'll have to look into them.
If you get the chance, I would recommend attending Millenicon. It's a nice convention.
