carcinogen of the day

Oct 27, 2008 22:33

I'll be glad when Breast Cancer Awareness month is over and I don't have to worry about discussing carcinogens every day. When I started this I was afraid I'd run out before the month ended. I don't think that's going to happen at this point.

Today's carcinogen is milk, specifically the kind that comes from artificially growth-hormoned cows. The culprit is insulin-like growth factor 1, which occurs naturally in milk and has been linked to pre-menopausal breast cancer. "Hold on," you say. "If IGF-1 is already in milk, what's the big deal about artificial hormones?" In the mid 1990s, Monsanto began producing recombinent Bovine Growth Hormone, which dramatically increases milk production in cows. rBGH also has the nifty little talent of boosting the amount of IGF-1 to twice the level of milk from (artificial) hormone-free cows. This is why milk with rBGH is banned in Canada and Europe. If you drink milk, I highly encourage all of you to get milk labeled hormone free.
