Lex set his jaw. “I’m not free.”
He must be arguing with Lionel again.
“So declare your independence,” Clark countered lightly. “July 4th is a great date for that.”
“Is it?”
“Yes,” he persisted, moving closer, forcing Lex to look up into his face. “And besides, there will be fireworks.”
“Real?” He was smiling now. “Or figurative?”

“Both.”
