Backstory: The truth is, Betta is an 82-year-old mermaid. Merfolk can live up to 300 years, so, truly, Betta is still a lovely young adult. As mentioned in some stories, merfolk are able to become humans, but the trick that no one ever mentions is that they take on the appearance of their age in human years. So a supple young mermaid-turned-human could look like a crusty old hag!

However, during her twenties and thirties, this wasn't a problem for Betta. It was the best time of her life. She would go on land, drink in wild human parties, have numerous love affairs with all kinds of men, and when it was all over she would return to the sea to live her normal life. Below the ocean she had friends, family, and a fiance, and on land she had the freedom to live life uninhibited.

That is, until she discovered gambling.

She began accenting her partying with gambling at a particular casino. She constantly lost, and found herself going into debt. She thought she could just ignore her debts by returning to the ocean, but it turned out that the bookee had a merman on staff. He went to her home, threatened her, and eventually roughed her up.

Thinking she had no other recourse, she started working for the casino. First as a dishwasher, then as a waitress, and eventually as a bartender. Whenever she would get close to paying off her debt, something would conveniently make her debt skyrocket again. In this way, the owner of the casino kept her on as staff for over fifteen years.

It was a miserable life, practically working as a slave - serving food and drinks to the most lecherous men. They would sexually harass her and touch her inappropriately, and she had no way of fighting back. Then of course there were the multiple encounters with the casino owner and his staff. Those encounters would have been considered rape, but poor Betta was too emotionally defeated and too exhausted from working 24 hours straight to even object.

When she was 51, the casino owner died and his son took over the business. When that happened, the son fired Betta, claiming she was too old and unattractive to work at his casino. However, he still held the debt over her head, and Betta reached her breaking point. She snapped.

And set the casino on fire. All of the customers managed to make it out alive, but the new owner and a few members of his staff were killed in the fire.

Betta was subsequently convicted of arson. She went to prison for thirty years before being released for good behavior. Betta will look back and tell you that those thirty years flew by compared to the fifteen years of miserable slavery under that awful casino. She spent her time in prison learning to read and write (merfolk don't have a writing system for the english language).

But now Betta is ex-con fresh out of prison, having been released a mere year ago. She's on probation so she can't leave the continent and go home to her family. Plus she still has that debt to pay off. So she has taken out a loan to start her own business - an old fashioned tavern and inn - to do the only thing she knows how, serve humans.

But at least this time she has control over her own life.

Misc. Notes:
1. She really REALLY loves to sing, and as a mermaid she has a beautiful voice, but as a human her voice sounds freaking terrible - scratchy, off-key, and just plain awful. To make matters even worse, she hosts a karaoke night every saturday night at the Chantey Shanty. The customers hate it, but the drink specials on saturday night entice them anyway. Critics of her singing automatically get banned from the bar for life. And at least one broken bone.

2. Betta still has the libido of a 20-year-old nymphomaniac and flirts shamelessly with the male patrons of the Shanty. She occasionally gets lucky if the poor man has enough drinks.

3. I guess I should make it clear that while she retains the appearance of an older woman, her body isn't aging internally. That's why she, despite her age and physical appearance, is healthy enough to live the life of a much younger woman (i.e. she isn't wheelchair-bound, at risk for heart attack, etc).

In-Character Example Post:

Today some kid wouldn't shut up about my age.

Stupid brat. 82 is young!

It's because of this damn human body. Why the hell do humans gotta age so damn fast anyway?

Well when she's 82 and decrepit and I'm just starting to experience middle age, I'll laugh at her sorry ass.

Stupid new kids and their stupid opinions. Hmph.
