The wind rises electric, and the fabric of reality starts to shift. My body is at once calm, a cool wash of euphoria rises over me...and at once violently ill. The nausea in my stomach is a strange off-set to what the coolness. This was what it was like ( Read more... )

As Angel shouts, I spin around to look. Although I don't need to, I can see him, hiding in the shadows, that loathsome soul curling within him. Spike. Yes, indeed, it's Spike. But he won't interrupt, not if we're fast, if we do whats needed.

I reach out for Angel, about to urge him to move faster, to open the seal, when something else happens. A portal opens... in the ceiling... and a boy comes tumbling out. A boy who looks at Angel with hatred in his eyes and shouts harsh words. Normally I wouldn't find that a problem.

But I did NOT plan for this. And it makes me angry that my plans have been so interrupted. Losing control... I can't stand it.

"Kill them!" I shout, turning to Angel. I cannot have this happen. This seal MUST be opened, and it matters not whose blood is spilled to get it done.

I hear her shout and I leap forward. The stranger has interrupted and he clearly has murderous intent, and to kill Spike, well...that'd be a pleasure.

As I advance upon them, I am ready. Ready to do my Slayer justice, to stop those who would try and end what we have and what we are trying to achieve.

I prepare to pounce forward on the new comer, when the scent hits me on the wind. It is faint, covered in dust, blood, and mysticism, but it's there.

...and it's a scent I know.

I take a step back in surprise.

"Connor?" I whisper.

Don't move out of the shadows, where I belong, down here in the dark with the evil nasties. I can feel em, through the ground, through my fingertips. I stay low to the ground because I'm one of em, I know my place. Learnt it a hundred times. Spike is a well trained lad, knows he's low, knows he's less...

The rumble underground is unbearable, it's like screaming and blood, claws and fangs...open up the earth and bad things will get out.

I crawl along, like a cat, quiet. Angelus advances on me, I duck my head, anticipating a blow. Play the whipping boy, I do, take my beatings till I learn to like them, take them till I crawl on my belly in the dirt, dry ground sticking to the blood, and what comes next I- I shudder.

But the blow never comes. He just...stands there. The voices laugh at me, hysterical, even. Echoing and shaking. Silly little William, not even good enough for daddy's attentions anymore, no more beatings for you. Not a lick.

He says a word, Holtz warned me he'd say it. But I know the truth, I know that what he says is a lie.

The word he says is not my name.

He stands over the body of a broken one. Scary light hair that doesn't seem natural. I'm going to assume he's not human either, but his diminished state indicates to me that he has fallen weak, and is at the mercy of Angelus.

It figures. The beast was always killing. It was his legacy. He probably brutalized this man minutes before I arrived.

I raise my arm, and with a pull of the lever a stake flies from my wrist unit.

"May your ashes scatter you to hell, demon," I whisper.

What IS this? This was not within my plans, and I can't stand to lose control. I had Angel, in the palm of my hand, so to speak, but this boy, he's changed everything now. Spike isn't even a factor any longer.

When the boy shoots a stake from some contraption at Angel, I scream his name. I'd push him out of the way if I could, because I need him alive, so to speak. And this boy, no, he cannot be here! He can't mess up my plans like this!

"ANGEL!" I watch, wide-eyed, waiting for him to move out of the way. I need my champion. And what I really need is to be corporeal, to get the job done myself.

Things begin to move in slow motion, or at least in my perception. The boy...Connor...has stepped forward, and fired at me, some sort of weapon. A projectile stake ( ... )

Angelus finds someone else to play with, a new son. Been replaced again, there, Will, but then what did you expect when you fail so completely ( ... )

The beast deserves to die, for what he did to my father. Did to me. Trapping us in a hell dimension...

But he was a lot quicker than I had imagined, quicker that Holtz said he'd be. Do I dare engage him in combat now, when my expectations were off? If I were to fall, I'd just be another victim of Angelus, and I did not want to go down like that.

He would repent his sins, and I would be the deliverer.

No.

I would wait, I would strike after I could do what all good predators do...

...observe their prey.

I flip around and fire off another stake, this one colliding into the wall, bringing a tumble of loose rocks down. Dust is kicked up, vision is obscured.

By the time they reacquaint their demon senses, I will already be as the clean air in this place is...

...gone.
