So overdue I can only apologize

Over a year later, I finally have this short story done. Things have been crazy for me (I'm heading for law school this fall) and my new work schedule is not cooperative with when I like to write. But, with that all said and done, Greedy, here is your story. I'm sorry, gomen, je suis desole, lo siento... etc. So, so sorry.

Title: Sentimental Journey
Fandom: FMA
Pairing: Greed/Ed
Rating: R
Summary: In an attempt to bring his father home, Ed finds someone less expected in front of him.

Ed tried, though not always successfully, not to dwell on what was past. He'd lost a lot through alchemy and found nearly as much. In the end, beneath Amestris in the old city of Xerxes, he had been more than prepared to give up his life for that of his brother's, but the Gate hadn't wanted it. His father had already bargained that sacrifice for them and made it. Ed had no idea what had happened to Hohenheim, but for all intents and purposes, Ed considered the man dead. For his father's sacrifice, Ed had gained a life ahead of him that, quite honestly, he hadn't been expecting. Not from the moment he'd realized the true nature of the philosopher's stone had he expected to ever survive to see his brother whole once again. He certainly hadn't anticipated meeting his niece and nephew. Still young, their personalities were already apparent. Tara was an Elric through and through, where her brother had more of the Rockbell nature.

It was troublesome only that Tara, at nine, was spending far too much time around the Mustang boy, who was too much like his father to suit his namesake (yes, Roy Mustang had named his child Edward).

Things had changed over the last twelve years. Ed was older, on the downward slope toward thirty, and still reminiscent of times gone by and time lost. He had long since taken to heart the old adage of "Don't ask, don't tell," that the military had adopted. Admittedly, Mustang knew full well of nearly all of Ed's flings over the years: a rather nice relationship with Fuery that ended amicably, a tumultuous affair with Russell that ended in more fumbling than actual sex and dating Lazarus from the public library for a few years and ending considerably less amicably than with Fuery.

There was only one that his commanding officer knew nothing about.

It was this lover that was on Ed's mind at the moment, and perhaps it was the thought of him that was guiding Ed's alchemy. He was trying to find a way to contact his father and exchange a bit about the other world's technology and science. They could update one another, and if there was any luck, Ed could bring Hohenheim back through. That had been the original intent. The experimentation and study that had allowed him the possibility of communicating with the other world intrigued him, but he had never seen it as anything more than an interesting way to pass the time.
It was perhaps a dangerous pursuit, but the simple fact was that, without much to entertain him as the rest of his friends and family moved on with their lives, Ed was growing bored. Not only that, but he still thought back to the briefest of his affairs, perhaps because it was cut short before it could really run its course.

Not that dwelling on it ever did him any good, because with the other man gone now, there wasn't a chance of it going anywhere.

Ed clapped his hands down and lit the symbol just as he'd done thousands of times before, though never for this purpose. Memories of the man long since gone were still demanding the majority of his attention, and that was the only explanation the blond could manage for why a male figure stood before him that was decidedly not Hohenheim.

The man looked no different than he had years ago, perhaps even a bit younger.

"Ed?" the man asked in a voice that brought a shiver through Ed's body just from the force at which memories were returning and flooding him. Ed could see the differences. There was a perfect, non-threatening smile on his face despite a look of confusion. His eyes, looking relieved and overjoyed, were a strange shade of blue, perhaps indigo, rather than violet. The mode of dress was totally different and left far more to the imagination than a vest and tight clothing ever had before.

"Greed?"

The smile remained in place, as though he could not manage to do anything but smile, or that the smile wast he only thing preventing him from breaking out into manic laughter.

It took several moments of them both staring at one another. Ed feared almost that another word would ruin the illusion in front of him, and he wondered if Greed was thinking the same. "You... you know who I am?" Ed asked. He was fairly certain that the man couldn't be mistaking him for the earth version of himself. Ed had been in his alter's body as he died. Ed's face had matured enough that he doubted he looked much like his old self, let alone the other wide-eyed version of himself on Earth.

"How did I get back here?" Greed asked.

"Back here?" Ed repeated back to him, slowly.

Greed folded his arms across his chest and laughed, and that sound made Ed almost want to cry. "Did you hit your head? Because the Edward Elric I remember was a bit of a genius. He wouldn't be so confused." He frowned as Ed gave no reaction, no surprise or joy, because the blond still couldn't figure out how to respond. "You know, I ran into your dad.He guessed that the other versions of us are sort of like placeholders for when we 'move on' from here. Except your 'placeholder' was killed in a dirigible crash."

If Ed was hesitant to speak before, he was even more so now, but he managed it because he knew he had to at least try to say something. "You're younger."

Greed laughed again, a good, hearty chortle that filled the room. It made Ed smile despite his shock. "That's all you can say?"

"I... wasn't expecting this. I was trying to get in touch with Hohenheim. I thought you were gone for good."

"Doesn't look that way," Greed said. "So... am I stuck in here?" He gestured to the circle beneath him.

"I... I don't think so, but you shouldn't really..."

Before Ed could finish the thought, let alone the sentence, the older man--though he didn't look much older any longer--crossed the distance between them. He paused only momentarily as he stepped outside the circle as though making sure he wouldn't disappear once he did. Ed opened his mouth to try to find the words to stop Greed and make him consider the consequences, but he found Greed's tongue replaced the words that had been on the tip of his own.

His own hand curled in Greed's hair as protests died on the lips that the other man was so thoroughly kissing. Like a man who had been living off of bread and water over the last few years and finally given a gourmet meal, the kiss that might have ended quickly for the sake of more questions quickly deepened. Ed knew that he wasn't going to get to ask much, not at the moment. His only regret now was that he hadn't prepared himself for his lover to come through the Gate, so he had no oil, nothing for what he knew, surely was going to follow quickly.
After some time that felt like too little and yet forever, Greed's lips left Ed's, and the alchemist managed to mutter, "Stupid idiot..." Not that it stopped the former homunculus from kissing down his neck and sucking at the skin just over his pulse point. He let out a soft moan despite wanting to rant at the risk Greed had taken. "You could have vanished outside the circle." And he let another small noise escape his lips, but it wasn't a whimper; no, Edward Elric would never admit to having dome something so ... girly as that.

"But I didn't." Ed could feel him smiling against the skill of his neck. "And now I'm here."

"Mmm ... so you are."

"Unless you want to do this on the ground, I would recommend making a bed. Soon." Greed was already pulling at Ed's shirt, and the alchemist only managed enough of a protest to do as the former homunculus had suggested. He knew well enough that Greed wouldn't ask for anything that he wanted, material possessions or a bed partner.

"Four poster with canopy," Greed said appreciatively at Ed's creation. "Very nice."

"Less talking," Ed said as he unbuttoned Greed's shirt. He decided he didn't like all of the buttons on this one. The black thing had been easy to pull off, and the vest required just a push, though Greed would bitch about where it landed and how it was treated. But still, this plain white shirt not only didn't suit him, nor did the navy blue vest. Ed would change them later with a few claps. But for now, he popped the last two buttons off the white shirt.

"Hey!" Greed said as Ed practically ripped the shirt off of him. "Those cost me..." Ed pulled the shirtless Greed down for a quick but fierce kiss.

"Alchemist," Ed said in a mocking tone. "I can fix the damned shirt." And make it black, preferably skin tight. Like those pants Greed used to wear. He got more aroused just at the memory of peeling those from the body in front of him. The plain navy slacks gave none of that satisfaction, though Ed was more careful of the gold pocketwatch they held.

"Reminded me of you," the man said as explanation as Ed carefully handled it and the pants to put them aside. He no sooner set them down as a pair of hands were at his own pants, pulling at them, impatient and not waiting for the fly. "So did leather. What happened to the leather pants?"

"Got stuck in them once during a hot day last year. Haven't worn them since." He finally helped the man and opened the button on his pants. "I could ask the same for you."

"If you wear leather pants where I was at and they weren't related to working with animals or safety protection, they thought you were only interested in one thing." He leaned down and bit at Ed's neck lightly. "While I am, I prefer it be with you."

Ed rolled his eyes and removed Greed's underwear before pushing him onto the bed. "Such a sweet talker."

"If I remember right, once you knew what I was talking about, it took more effort to take your pants off than it did to get in them," Greed said as he watched Ed removing his own underwear.

"I was an innocent teenager and you were keen on defiling me. I couldn't help that I was oblivious."

Greed gave a predatory grin. "Lucky for me you did finally catch on." He licked his lips as Ed finally removed the last of the clothes below his waist. "I was beginning to doubt the word I'd heard that you were a prodigy."

Ed rolled his eyes. "You were corrupting an untainted youth," he said as he crawled onto the bed over Greed's body. He leaned down to kiss him with a smile.

Greed chuckled. "Hmm... I have to say that I think I do some pretty nice work."

He rolled his eyes. "I am glad to see that you're just as humble as you used to be."

"I could be humble or tell the truth. I prefer to be truthful in all things."

"In all things?" Ed asked as he let his lips hover just above Greed's mouth.

"Nearly all," Greed said before capturing Ed's lips again and pulling his hips down to meet his. His hand slid down Ed's back until it moved all the way down to his behind. He squeezed none-to-gently. It elicited a gasp from Ed, who returned by rubbing his hips against Greed's, rubbing their hardened members together. Greed moaned and deepend the kiss.

Ed's lips parted and their tongues dueled for supremacy. As a teen, he hadn't known what he was doing, but now he understood, and he wasn't about to back down from his lover. He was more mature now, older, wiser, more experienced. He allowed one hand to move to Greed's chest and lightly tweek one of his nipples.

Greed's lips left Ed's for only a moment. "That is new. Have you been learning some things while I was gone?"

"Some private tutors," Ed joked. "But they are nothing compared to the master teacher."

"Damned right," Greed said, flipping their positions and kissing down Ed's neck. He nibbled and marked, just as he had always done--something Ed then had to try to hide from his brother and the rest of the world. It wasn't that it was something new or different from what Ed knew with his other lovers, but it was entirely the way that Greed did it. He had a way about him, about everything he did that once turned Ed to mush and now lit a fire inside of him.

Hips began moving against one another, mouths began seeking available inches of skin. Ed might have said that it was just like it used to be, but that wasn't true. There was desperation and longing between them that had never been there before. They were relearning one another's bodies after years with other partners. Ed knew that this time, they would likely go back to the same as before, himself on the bottom, Greed on top. It didn't mean that he would continue that way, but they both needed something familiar.

He let one of his legs curl around Greed's hip. The man smiled. "Eager."

"Shut up," he said. "And just get started."

Greed chuckled, moving down Ed's body, kissing and practically worshiping his body on his way down. This was a bit new. He was unfamiliar with anything but the quick, passionate nights they'd spent together in the past. He felt the other man kiss and lick at his inner thighs, teasing him, then just as his mouth was about to hover over Ed's sex, the man hopped off of the bed. Ed growled at him, and he merely smirked as he pulled a bottle from his pants pocket.

"You carried lube with you? God... what kind of a slut did I get myself involved with?"

"Rarely use it," he said, "but good and safe are difficult to come by there. I never go without. Just in case." He poured a small amount onto his fingers and let them press against Ed's pucker. "And aren't you glad of it?"

"Yes. Oh so grateful you're a sex fiend."

Greed grinned and moved one of his fingers around Ed's entrance as his mouth finally descended to his penis, forcing Ed to let out a loud moan. The bastard had used the same trick before, Ed thought, but somehow, he found he no more minded now than he had then. He forced himself not to move upward into a mouth that seemed much less fearsome than the last time they had done this--given that Greed's teeth were no longer razor-sharp and dangerous. His mouth moved as his finger slowly tried to press inside of Ed.

The younger man let out a moan, savoring the feeling of his lover again preparing to take him. Having Greed back once again was more than Ed could have hoped for in those days he'd wished they'd have just one last time together.

He could feel that insistent finger finally working beyond that ring of muscle and into his body. Greed's mouth dipped down, then up. His tongue licked and moved against  Ed's sex. It flicked lightly over the slit at the top and made the man's toes curl into the sheets of the bed he'd made. He thrust his hips up toward Greed's mouth as the man added a second finger.

"Mmmm..." Greed hummed around Ed's sex, making his hips jerk up quickly and allowing the second finger to move into his entrance to join the first. They began to move slowly in and out as Greed set a pace ot match his mouth.

"Stop..." Ed managed, looking through half-lidded eyes at his lover. "I won't last."

Greed moved his mouth away. "You aren't ready," he said as he scissored his fingers to stretch him out.

"I'm close enough. It hasn't been that long for me." Greed half-glared at the mention of other previous partners, then began adding a third finger, almost as though he were spiting Ed for experience outside of himself. "Greeed...." he half-moaned, half-whined.

The other man only chuckled and kissed Ed's inner thighs as he worked the three fingers in and out of his entrance. He managed to tortue Ed this way for quite some time before seeming to finally break down and press his member against Ed's entrance. The blond nodded at the feeling. He'd thought he'd never again feel that sensation, the anticipation running through his veins, ever again. Having that again felt like coming home. He could feel the blunt end of the man's sex pushing into him slowly, then the telltale pop of it finally slipping inside.

"Oh... God," Greed said with a relieved sigh. "I missed this. You."

Ed ran his hands over Greed's arm and back. "Me too."

The other man slowly slid into him until he was fully inside Ed, and the young man had forgotten just how full that feeling was. He smiled and kissed Ed's jaw and neck until the smaller man gave a nod. He moved out again, then slid inside him again. The pace began slowly, then faster, Ed's legs held tightly around Greed's hips, his arms around his shoulders. Greed moaned into Ed's ear. "Never felt so good with anyone but you."

Ed didn't know if his lover was being truthful or he was simply caught up in the moment, but it didn't matter. It didn't matter because he was there; because this wasn't a figment of Ed's imagination. The pace quickened as hands, mouths were everywhere. Taste and sensations were exactly just as he'd recalled. It was hard and brutal, yet more tender than it had ever been before. The pace became more erratic on both their parts before Ed could feel the building climax and as moans and cries growing louder and longer. Finally, they both came, almost simultaneously. They were in sync in a way they had never been even before.

Greed rode out the last spasms of his orgasm as Ed felt his body melting into the relaxation that inevitably hit him after sex.

The older man slowly withdrew and collapsed into a slump at Ed's side.

"So, is this permanent? Am I here for good?"

"Do you want to be?" Ed asked, tentatively.

Greed's hand moved to Ed's cheek. If the man said no after such a gentle touch, it might break the blond as his death had before. "Nothing is as good as this is waiting for me on the other side. Not even close."

"It should be. Though you weren't who I was trying to bring back. I was trying to contact my father."

"He's a professor on the other side now. Doing a lot of good."

"You really did  talk to my father?" Ed suddenly had this vision of Greed explaining to Hohenheim that he had once been Ed's lover and the conversation that would have followed.

He nodded. "Told him I was from the other side. He talked about you, your brother and your mom. Said he's biding his time until he sees her." He ran his hands over Ed's arm. "I don't think he has too long until that happens."

"Oh. So he's..."

"Not well. They're calling it cancer over there, instead of what you and I know it is." Greed leaned forward and kissed him on the forehead. "But he is happy. I don't know if he'd be unhappy if you brought him here, though. He might like to see you and Al again."

Ed nodded. "I'll think about it. I don't want to have another accident." Greed held him for a moment, as though waiting for Ed to come to terms with the idea his father really was dying, that his situation had not improved on the other side of the Gate. Dealing with a parent's mortality was hard enough without trying to come to terms with the idea that he could not even be with him in those final moments. His father may have left, may have done a lot wrong, but he did try to make things right in the end.

"You know, you didn't really answer my question. Is this permanent?"

"I think it should be," Ed said, getting a smile from his lover in return. He moved forward to kiss Greed on the lips, to have the other man deepen it, only to break it and look him in the eyes.

"I should assume alchemy and Al are still high on your list?"

"They're there, but Al's a grown man who doesn't need me like he used to. And I'm more cautious about my obsession with alchemy." Ed moved to prop his head on his hand and elbow. "Speaking of obsessions, are you still going to be obsessed with power, and possessions?"

"Oh, most definitely. I want everything." He kissed Ed. "I've just reassessed what that means." He kissed him again, holding him close.

Ed responded to the kiss, knowing he'd tease him later if Greed's sentimental streak continued, but tonight, he was feeling a bit less cynical.
