As a radio presenter, writer and occasional author. I am called a "journalist" and as such my work involves from time to time, interviewing people for news items and radio shows.
Yesterday I was told by a local events organiser that some pop stars have complained about harassment by members of the press last year at a number of local events and thus interviews are barred this year! Now forgive me for sounding off, but THEY chose to go into the public eye and choose a life in the limelight, I can hardly feel sorry for them being chased by the press wherever they go lol! It was the PRESS that made them celebs in the first place!
I worked for many years managing famous people, and most of them know that this comes with the territory. You can't become a celebrity without the help of the press, and you can't get hit records without the help of radio stations!! It is part of the job description! If you want PRIVACY don't become a pop star! lol
It might be useful for these whinging minnies to remember that, because if they don't want publicity, they should maybe get out of the limelight and find a more suitable job!
The Glastonbury Festival this year, took the same approach, hindering the press in their attempts to get interviews and a lot of my colleagues in the media were moaning like mad about it. Now whilst this may not be the direct fault of the organisers themselves, they shouldn't be pandering to these requests from the so called "stars". They pay them a lot of money to perform at these events and they should be told that talking to the press is part of their contract.
As a journalist, I only attend these events to get pictures and interviews, and if we are stopped from getting these, there is little point in us attending and if the media stop attending, tickets stop selling.
Sorry, but if you're a pop star you have to be prepared to talk to the media and press like it or not!
