For two weeks running, I've had to read horribly depressing children's books for class. Last week was Charlotte's Web, and today I read Bridge to Terabithia. Okay, I admit they aren't horrible or depressing, but they're both pretty darn sad books. The one book that always gets to me emotionally is Where The Red Fern Grows . . . OMG, it breaks my heart. I just started reading Charlotte's Web to my kids tonight!

Where The Red Fern Grows is heartbreaking as well. They're all great books, which is probably why they are so sad. (As much as my inner lover of all things dark hates to admit it, I love happy endings the best.)

Yay for sharing Charlotte's Web with your kids! It's actually critically considered to be one of the best constructed novels out there, thanks to the parallelism of the plot and the changing seasons/weather. And I'll stop before entering full-out English major mode and just say it's a great book. Charlotte is delightfully snarky. :)

I never really thought of Charlotte's Web as sad, for some reason. Then again, it's been forever since I've read it. OTOH, I can't read through Bridge of Terabithia without tears streaming down my face.

If you'd like some happy kidlit to balance it out, may I suggest The Secret Garden?
