So, Desolation Row. I like it! Interestingly enough, it turns out that even after immersing myself in bandom, my reaction to new My Chem music is the same as it's always been. Listen once, reassure myself that Gerard's emoting always grows on me, hearteyes over the guitar solos, then do something else for a bit before listening a second tiime and forming an opinion. (I'm not a person who can tell if they truly love something or not on a first listen. In fact, thinking back over the years to all the other MCR I'd listened to for an exciting first time, the only song that immediately grabbed me was "Mama," and that was more in a "WTF, Gerard, ILU" sort of way.) But after listening a few more times I completely love it. ♥
When I saw the
track listing for the Watchmen Soundtrack I kind of blinked and thought "What the hell are MCR doing on there?" Because I love the boys, really, but it is sort of bizarre to see them on an album with the greatest hits of the 60s and 70s. I really hope Zack Snyder knows what he's doing here! I mean, "The Sound of Silence" is such a haunting song, as is "Hallelujah" and then there's the Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole and everything, and, well. My Chem stick out like a sore thumb.
I have my personal theory about when in the movie My Chem's song is going to be used (especially now that I've heard it), and it would make sense that they need something more punk and riotous than Simon and Garfunkel. Still kind of makes me raise my eyebrows a bit, even though it's the perfect collision of loves. Probably BECAUSE it's the perfect collision of loves, actually. I'm still not quite used to this fandom's tendency to give me everything I want and then some.
But the real important thing here is a single line from the article about the soundtrack: Bates has also been chosen to score the Watchmen's DVD added story, "Tales From The Black Freighter."
YOU GUYS THEY'RE FILMING TALES FROM THE BLACK FREIGHTER. I WAS SURE THAT WAS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WAS CUT ENTIRELY, WHICH MADE ME SAD, BUT NO! IT'S GOING TO BE A DVD EXTRA! THAT IS SO AWESOME!
