The other guys, the younger ones that ain’t been tested, they don’t get it. They grin and hit him on the shoulder and tell him that it’s great, they’re glad he’s taken an offer, but he can see that they think he’s finally fallen off his fucking pedestal.
Like he’s finally getting his comeuppance from his talk about TMU. Like he’s not gonna go pro, like he’s gonna end up like all those other state champs with their shiny rings and screwed-up lives.
“Dream big,” he heard a freshman whisper, the answering snickers from the group of kids who don’t have half his talent.
Smash Williams’ momma didn’t raise no fool. Smash is gonna go to Whitmore, and he’s gonna turn that fucking team around. He remembers what a mess the Panthers were back when Jason Street broke his back, and Smash Williams helped bring them back.
He’s gonna go to Whitmore, and he’s gonna play out there with the big boys when he’s just a freshman instead of sitting around playing bitch to upperclassmen. He’s gonna get noticed, and Smash Williams is going to make that school fucking shine out on the field.
