Pansy had been watching him for weeks, sinking further and further into this... depression? Isolation? She wasn’t sure what it was, exactly, but she hated the dark circles under his eyes and the dark shadows in his eyes.

It made him look old, so much older than her, and she was afraid for him.

She finally managed the courage to corner him in an unused classroom in the dungeons, and had been attempting to get the fact that she was there for him, no matter what, through his thick skull for nearly twenty minutes.

“You can’t do this on your own, Draco,” Pansy said. “No, don’t walk away from me! This is important!”

“I know it’s important,” Draco snapped back. “It’s my family, Pansy. They’re all I have.”

“No, they aren’t!” Pansy insisted. She stepped in front of him, blocking him from going out the door. “Draco, I’ll help you. You know I’d do anything for you.”

He shook his head. “Pansy, I appreciate it, but I can’t involve you in this. I’ve already said too much.”

“What, that you have some sort of mission and your family’s safety is at sake? I’m in the dark and I hate it,” Pansy said, grasping his arm to keep him from trying to flee again. “I thought we were closer than that. I thought you knew you can trust me with anything.”

He wrenched his arm away, expression unreadable.”Pansy, please. Just let me do this on my own.”
Pansy opened her mouth to tell him that this was killing him, that he was sinking into something that even she, close as she was to him, could see was destructive and stupid and wrong, when the doorknob slowly turned.

“What are you two doing in here? Plotting evil deeds?” Ginny Weasley smirked as she swung open the door.

Pansy froze, and Draco stiffened even more.

“I seem to have struck a nerve,” Ginny said, looking back and forth between Draco and Pansy.

“Leave us alone, Weasley,” Pansy snapped.

“What, she’s your attack dog now?” Ginny asked, looking past her at Draco.

“This isn’t the time, Ginny,” Draco said.

Pansy jerked her head around sharply. Since when was Draco on any sort of first-name basis with a Weasley? When had the entire world changed? She felt like she was stuck, back when things had been simple and predictable and fun.

Last year, she thought wryly. Just last year things were manageable.

“I can’t do this,” Draco muttered, and swept past them.

Just like Lucius, Pansy thought, recognizing the way he held his shoulders and the sweep of his robes. She was still staring at the door, almost hoping he would return and ... and... fix things, somehow.

Ginny Weasley was staring the same way, but then hurried out, lips twisted into a frown.

When had things become so twisted?

Pansy headed back to the common room, grateful for once she had homework. Herbology, at least, still made sense.

He’d crashed the wedding, knowing that Daphne had purposefully not invited him, and watched her walk the aisle in a beautiful dress that should have been picked with him in mind.

Things had broken so badly, Zacharias thought. Everyone else had healed and their very society had patched generations-deep cracks in its foundation, but he and Daphne had shattered into thousands of pieces.

He just wanted her back in his arms.

He faintly heard the word “objections?”

He didn’t quite realize that he’d decided to stand until realizing that everyone was looking at him, and Daphne was shaking her head at him, pleading with her eyes for him to go away.

He couldn’t.

“I love you,” he said. Imploring. Pleading. Hoping.

Daphne shook her head again. “I don’t,” her voice cracked a bit, “love you. Anymore.”

Zacharias bit his lip, to keep himself from screaming that she was lying, that he could tell. That he knew her better than this. “Take care of her,” he said to the groom instead, and walked out, feeling like he was leaving a funeral.

One day she’d come back, and tell him that she still loved him.

One day she’d forgive him.

One day.

It wasn’t that Lily didn’t enjoy the company of her housemates. She usually ended up laughing when she spent time with them, and even the boys - frustrating though they might be - weren’t complete jerks all the time.

It’s just that sometimes, she doesn’t want to hear every Quidditch stat ever recorded parroted back to her while she’s trying to study, or hearing her supposed friends giggling about how cute James and Sirius are.

Sometimes she just needs to get away from them. She’s spent years in their constant company, after all. It’s natural to want to seek out fresh faces.

And so what if she spends her time with Severus? All her friends think he’s a loser, but they’ve never actually talked to him. He doesn’t think she’s talking about potions ingredients when she mentions the Beatles. He actually does know what she’s talking about when she does talk about potions ingredients, and not in the smirking way that the boys always seem to.

And when his hair falls in his eyes and he shoves it out of the way, annoyed, she can’t help but think he’s cute.

Lily kind of likes getting to sneak around the dungeons, feeling dangerous and rebellious instead of bored and studious. And she likes that she’s the one that breaks the tension and kisses him, because he’s too uncertain.

And most of all she likes the sparks that tingle along her spine every time he touches her.

Lily knows it’ll never last, but she’s happy with what she has.
