Some of those delta islands had me dreaming of buying a riverboat and creating a weekend resort out there. If only there was more of an audience and market for that kind of thing...
Sure, and how much would I need to buy a riverboat and one of the old plantation houses in the Isleton area? And period costumes for the staff?
The idea was cocktails on the boat as it goes to one of the grand houses out in the islands, dinner on the island, return with aperfits and a vaudeville act on the boat.
The bad thing is that it would be marketable to about 200 people in the whole damn state.
Nonsense. Done right, you could draw a hell of a crowd, especially if you marketed it right--there are mansions in the Delta that specialize in hosting parties, weddings, etcetera.
I don't know about the big mansions, but you can get buildings in Isleton like this:
Period costumes for the staff would be the easiest part: Sacramento Dry Goods specializes in that kind of stuff (just picked up a frock coat there while I was in Old Sac yesterday) and there are plenty of other period-clothing suppliers, and actors in Sacramento can be had cheaply.
I'm not saying it would be easy, but if you had investors it could be done...and to a potential market of a lot more than 200 people.
There is another thing that makes this proposal difficult. Since the ACOE assessment of the levys, and proposal that some parts of the islands should be abandoned and allowed to flood, insurance is astronomical.
I have indeed. I do an island hop ride around the area that is one of my favorites. And I'm aiming to have a press by the time the pear harvest is coming in so I can make peary from island pears.
It's not quite apples from Summerisle, but it will do.
