bacon wrapped tofu

Mar 29, 2009 01:07

Made this for a party last weekend. Apple-smoked no-nitrate bacon, firm tofu, sprinkled with a little bit of dry mustard and baked for around 40 minutes, drained off excess fat, baked for a bit more.

Not bad dipped in peach/pineapple salsa.

Vivian and I celebrated our 10th anniversary by spending the night on the Delta King last night. For those of you not familiar with it, the Delta King is a riverboat that operated between Sacramento and San Francisco with its sister craft the Delta Queen, from 1927 to 1940. After 1940 it served as a Navy craft and an Alaskan bunkhouse, was stolen once and sunk twice, became the original reason for the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, and for the past 20 years it has been permanently docked on Old Sacramento's waterfront as a restaurant, bar, theater, nightclub/conference space and hotel. I had always meant to check out the hotel, which was very nice indeed. We also went to the Firehouse Restaurant, another local landmark (an 1860s era firehouse, on the National Register, it has been one of the finest restaurants in town since it opened in 1960) and spent waaay too much on a really, really good dinner.

When we got home today I discovered my publisher sent a royalty check for the new book. Sold over 1500 copies between October 1 and December 31. For a book with a total print run of 2400, that's not bad at all...at this rate, it will outsell the other two books sometime this year. It's still nowhere near enough to live on, but thanks to the fact that I'm finally working as a historian for a living it's just icing on a particularly delicious career cake. Even the fact that I'm giving half the money to the archive that provided the photos is just fine: it's nice being able to provide support for an archive I have used so much, even if it's a donation in the "high three digits" category.

Tonight we went to Reverence. It's nice having a really good nightclub we can walk to. Got to see some old friends, dance around a bit and stroll home. So far it has been a pretty good weekend, and since I'm taking my furlough day Monday it's only half over. Heh.
