Chapter 12
"Plans"
Kaori instantly waved Mello over when he entered the art room; Near hadn't arrived yet, and it was just the two of them at the table.
“Last night was fun,” she told him. “Thanks for taking me.”
“No problem.” He smiled. “I'm glad you had fun. I was hoping you would.”
“When are we going again?” she asked hopefully.
“We should wait a couple nights, just in case,” Mello told her. “I say we could go Saturday.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
They ceased the conversation as Near came in and sat down. But Kaori looked forward to Saturday. And maybe not only because she was getting to go outside the orphanage.
During science class, Kaori noticed that Mello and Matt weren't talking; instead of Matt's usual cheerful greeting, he looked slightly morose and depressed.
The teacher was giving instructions, so she couldn't ask him what was wrong; taking a sheet of paper, she scribbled something down and slid it to where he could read it.
What's wrong?
He looked at it a moment, and then scribbled something back.
Nothing. Just tired.
She sighed and handed it back to him with a newly written message.
Did you and Mello fight again after I went to my room last night?
He didn't write back that time, and Kaori reluctantly focused her attention back on the teacher.
Mello didn't seem to care; he barely looked at Matt, and Kaori could guess that he was the one who had started the argument. Either that or he just didn't care about the fight at all.
Science class seemed to drag on forever.
At dinner, Kaori wasn't hungry so she poked at her food while resting her chin in her hand.
“Something the matter?” Near asked.
“No...I just...I think Matt and Mello had another fight. They wouldn't look at or talk to each other during science.... And Matt said nothing was wrong, but he looked really depressed,” she confided.
“It's possible,” Near replied. “I wouldn't worry about it - it's their problem.”
“Yeah...I guess you're right.” She stabbed at her food again.
“Report cards are being handed out soon,” Near said, hoping to change the subject.
“I know...it's kind of funny, you know? Last time I was worried about getting horrible grades, and this time I'm worried about getting good ones.” She laughed. “Maybe I should just flunk on purpose.”
“Don't do that. It's just what those girls want. Besides...they've left you alone, haven't they?” he asked.
“Yeah, thanks to Mello. I admit I didn't believe him at first when he said they were afraid of him. It seems he was right. People see him around me, and they don't bother me anymore.”
“That's good, at least.”
“Yeah.”
“So what do you think about this whole thing now?” Near asked.
“To tell the truth, this situation isn't as bad as I first thought it'd be. He's actually fun to be around,” Kaori replied. “I'm kind of glad L thought of this, actually.”
“Glad L thought of what?” asked a voice, and a moment later Matt slid in beside Kaori.
“Oh, nothing. What are you doing over here?” she asked.
He sighed. “Mello and I did have another fight,” he said.
“About what?”
“Nothing...” he shrugged. “Just stuff.”
“You two really don't want to talk about the reasons you fight, do you?” she said.
“I told you, it's just stupid guy stuff.”
“If it's just stupid guy stuff, then why do you guys keep fighting about it?” Near asked him, and Matt shot him a glare.
“Well then, who started it?” Kaori said.
“I did...at least, it was my fault he got mad at me....” Matt replied, not wanting to go into more detail. I knew the rules of the game, and I broke them. Therefore I got punished. It only makes sense. Oh, fuck that - Mello makes up new rules every other day just to suit him.
“I'm sure he isn't as mad as you think he is - why not try talking to him about it?” Kaori suggested.
“Mello doesn't talk about this stuff,” he answered. “Besides...he's completely ignoring me, so it's really no use.”
“What the hell did you do?” Kaori said in bemusement.
“Nothing...I just pissed him off, that was all.”
She rolled her eyes. “Fine, I won't ask.”
You wouldn't want to know, anyway, he thought.
