And the final ones

I loved some of the costumes I've worn over the years. This one wasn't one of them, though. It was a pretty color, but I hated the design. At least it was better than the '30's style sack that everyone else loved and I hated....and I have not put a picture of it up. If you want to scoff and laugh, email me and I'lls end you a copy, but I'm not ( Read more... )

That hat makes you look unbalanced! Very bizarre hat!

LOL! It was a very fun hat though, and it is described in the song as "An 85 dollar hat, what do you think of that? Fifteen feathers from the pigeon family and a bird of paradise bloom. I hid this hat for four long years..."

You've been in quite a few productions, I see. And created and worn some lovely costumes. I'd like to know if you have to shop for all the fabric and trims yourself, or are they provided?

It depends on the theater. In New Jersey we had to provide our own costumes unless it was a period piece. Thank heavens I didn't do anything older than the 1930's there! Our theater in our town has seamstresses that do the designing and sewing. When they get caught in a crunch, I do sew some of the costumes (like the kids ones in Wizard of Oz) but I don't design them. Little Women was at a totally new theater, they had NO costumes to start with, so those of us that sewed helped out as much as we could. They handed me the pattern, instructions, and fabric, and it took me a good two weeks to get it done.

I've enjoyed all the pics, though I may not have much to say about them.

LOL, that's ok! I think a large part of the reason that I like acting is getting to play dress up with some lovely clothes. The biggest part, of course, is the applause! (Not totally, it's simply fun to get into someone elses skin, but the recognition is fun too!)

It's comforting it took so long to get in to!

Found them! What a variety and you have a lovely Elizabethan costume not unlike my Tudor ‘Jane Seymour’ dress. I see you made some yourself which I did once but that was a Tudor servant’s costume for workshops. All my costumes for ‘plays’ [if you can call them that] were either hired or cobbled together from stocks! Thank goodness I didn’t have to make them all!

I'm ready to retire for a bit. I like to sew, but some of the costumes, such as my Elizabethan one, are clearly beyond my abilities!

I would dearly love my very own Tudor dress and I’m seriously thinking about having a go but it would be very hard work and expensive. My Jane Seymour dress was made with boning etc by an expert in historical costumes so I know I couldn’t really compete with that degree of authenticity. But I might get close. It’s just finding the time really.

One thing I would suggest that might bring down the cost some-what. See if you can get your fabric through either a wholesaler, or over the internet. They got the taffeta for my little women dress on line, and it was way, way cheaper to do it that way than to get it at a local shop, even with the shipping thrown in.
