Okay, I've been watching a new anime (five episodes so far) and it's fucking awesome. I haven't been hooked up on an anime in a long time (since Big Roundup), and I'm really picky, too, so this is really exciting for me. The Manga is even better then the anime, but it's harder to get my hands on. I'm hoping it will get licensed soon.
Basically it's a story about a young apathetic boy whos only wish is to live a simple, carefree life. He doesn't really socializes or puts effort into anything he does and takes interest in absolutely nothing, spending his afternoons helping his Gran run the family pancake store.
Also? He has super secret ninja arts powers hidden inside of him, waiting to be awakened, a bunch of secret ninja organization (run by a powerful corrupted politician) is after him, and a bunch of other secret ninja organization is after him, too, so they can defend him and make sure he won't give the arts away or misuse them. And the only reason non of the sides are killing him is that the power will resurrect in someone else.
His reaction to this? Meh, whatever, I need to go buy some groceries for the store.
He's not too smart, is slow to react and has a glassy expression. Basically this is a story of an AU featuring Ohno Satoshi as the main character. I swear to God, Miharu even looks pretty much exactly like Ohno did when he was a young boy, down to the cute awkward nose, small mouth, sleepy eyes and tiny size.
Also? much like Ohno Miharu is aware of how helpless and adorable he looks, and isn't afraid to use it to his advantage constantly. To manipulate his teachers and classmates to do his bidding or just make them feel bad about themselves, and to trick the bad guys into thinking he's a stupid little cute kid. He's smart enough to know when it will work and on whom he can use it.
Here he is using it to win a basketball game he has no interest in playing in the first place, just so everyone will leave him the fuck alone about fucking sport class.
This is Yoite, aka "the monster" (aka the one who looks like an anime early Ryan Ross); He's a boy who uses his life force to harm and kill other ninjas who get in his way. The only time so far I saw him show emotion is when someone offhandedly said to someone else "I thought he'd be a big guy, but he's just a kid with a cute face!" - yeah, Yoite had to be talked down from killing him.
In the 5th episode Yoite kidnaps Miharu and makes a pact with him. Miharu will fulfill Yoite wish after he'll gain control over his powers, and in return Yoite will help him with whatever he needs not kill all of his new friends and anyone he ever cared about.
My only problem with this anime is that the characters are too young for me to ship them. I guess Yoite is probably legal in most countries (though not in Japan)
The angst and comedy is really well-balanced and the humor always kicks in not too soon but not too late to balance out all the AAAAAANGST and fucked-up characters. Basically, if you took out all the humor, it would make a beautiful Japanese movie about fucked up teenagers. But that would probably mean that the main character would kill himself in the end after taking out some of his friends, so, no thank you.
