“So until next time then?” Elle asked sardonically as her partner got up from the bed. She didn’t bother moving to her own clothes then, only held the sheet to her otherwise nude form while she sat up against the headboard.

Noah closed his eyes in frustration as he reached for his boxers from the floor. “Elle, please, don’t make this any harder then it has to be.”

“So I can make it even easier for you to walk away from me? I’m the one who gets left behind every time we do this, Bennet. I think I’m allowed to make it just a little difficult for you because God knows it’s easy enough for you to leave me here when I keep my mouth shut.”

Pulling on his pants as quickly as he could, he replied, “And yet you still agree to this. Every weekend, same place, same time, I walk in here and find you waiting for me. You could say no, that it’s gotten to be too much for you, but you don’t.”

“Because you know I want you and I hate myself for it. All I want is you, to feel you, to be with you and I take what I can get because I know I can’t even allow myself to imagine I’ll have more with you than this. Whatever the fuck this even is.”

“I love you, Elle,” he stated, his tone deep and even. He hated himself in return for it, he knew it was wrong and he knew it was even worse to tell her. But he also knew that he at least owed her the truth.

“But you still go home to her,” Elle replied bitterly, turning her head from Noah as he buttoned his shirt.

“She’s my wife.”

“And I’m the one you fuck.”

Stopping, he turned to her, trying to will her eyes to meet his. “Yes. And you should at least be comforted in knowing that I don’t sleep with my wife. That is yours. Only yours. And whether you believe it or not, I do love you. If circumstances were different you would be the one to have me whenever you wanted me but this is what we have. This is what we are. We’re partners, we’re lovers and at least for the foreseeable future that’s all we may be. I’m sorry that it’s not enough for you, but know that this is just as hard for me as it is for you and it kills me to see you like this and know there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.”

Elle never knew where she had gone so wrong, how this had become her life, how she actually was comforted by that. Still there was one more ounce of truth she knew she owed him in return.

Noah was dressed and almost to the door to leave when she called out to him.

“One more thing, Bennet.”

“Elle, you know I have to go. I’m already late.”

She almost scoffed at the thought that he wasn’t the only one. Even from halfway across the room her gaze seemed to burn into his as she told him, “I’m naming him Noah.”
