Puppy?

How do you teach a puppy to pee in a specific place (on a newspaper, or a puppy-diaper kinda thing), and not all over the place?

The only dog I ever had came to us older, and already trained... I didn't appreciate that at the time, but REALLY.

It's Labrador Golden Retriever. It's adorable, friendly, stupid ball of fluff. It's also peeing all over the place and soon to become DEAD adorable friendly stupid ball of fluff. :D
The adorableness is just saving him for now.

i think you have to watch him closely and when it seems like he needs to pee you have to move him to the location that you wnat him to use and eventually he'll associate peeing with that place. but idk really. that is based on something i've heard i've never had a puppy myself.

That's exactly what I've heard. Only when he starts to pee and I move him, he stops to pee. And then he waits until I release him and go away, and gets back to wherever he wanted to pee in the first place :D.
Of course, I would just place the paper where he likes to pee, but it's never the same spot!

What you have to do is keep the dog in ONE room only. Let's say the kitchen. And the entire floor is covered with paper, so that the dog will pee anywhere. Every day, you remove a little bit of the paper, reducing the size of the peeing area. By the end of (I can't remember) a couple of weeks, the dog is peeing ONLY in the area with the paper. Obviously, you've got to keep a 24/7 watch on the dog to make sure it doesn't pee on the uncovered spots. Perhaps a sort of moveable fence/barrier can be used. And, of course, when the dog pees only on the paper, you have to praise it lavishly. By the time the paper is in only one small area, then you can try to move the peeing activity outside. And then collapse.

Hope the above helps.
Hugs,
H.

My grandma had a good method, but it was tested on cats only. It'd be too brutal anyway, I guess...

I'm almost afraid to ask. Almost.

So, what is it? :D

Erm...okay.

First, wait until the puppy pees. Then - as soon as it pees, catch it and wipe the puddle with its face.

Yes, I know. But it worked - at least that's what I heard. The cats turned out to be extraordinarily quick learners ;)

See, that works only with cats. do it with a puppy, and he either thinks this is the exact spot he is supposed to pee at... or starts to lick his own pee.

Seriously.
