What a day
Had the most fantastic day yesterday. Jamie and I wake up relatively early after a good night's rest and immediately feel the need to make the most of the day. She had an incredibly busy week previously, staying up at school late several nights and almost 12 hours saturday, so we wanted to cram as much fun into one day as possible. I think its safe to say we succeeded.
We invited Kirk over, got the apartment amazingly clean before he arrived, then served up a delicious breakfast of eggs over easy, toast, and grilled pineapple. Mmmm, grilled pineapple (drool). Then we got our bike gear together, filled up the water bottles, tossed a few discs into backpacks, then headed off for what Jamie and I call our "Tour De Houston!" (copyright E&JA, not mayor Bill White).
Took 18th to Heights, down Heights to Allen Pkwy, this into and through downtown taking Leeland to Cullen, rode through UH pointing out many of our favorite or memorable spots to Kirk, then took an hour break at MacGregor park so Jamie could listen to tunes and lay out in the shade while I introduced Kirk to the really challenging course there. Continued the ride, followed the bayou to Herman park, rode around the zoo and the museums, paused in front of MFAH to appreciate "Yellow Penetrable," took Montrose then Waugh up to 11th, then paused for a late and well needed lunch at Berry Hill. Damn we were some starving mofo's. Carb heavy mexican food downed, crazed appetites abated, we pushed the last few miles home on exhausted and sore behinds.
After showers and recoup time (aka, talks with doug and a pint of beer), we began brewing our group effort Honey Brown. We're taking a standard english brown ale recipe and swapping out 2 pounds of malt extract for honey. Kirk brought over many of his honey's, and after a delicious sampling, we settled on a combination Buckwheat and Colorado wildflower to make up the honey component. Flawless brewing, it could not have been managed any better. During the brew time we were also able to keg our cherry bock, giving Kirk a keg breakdown/clean/use demonstration.
Kirk left before 7, Jamie and I put the dog in the car, ran a few errands including getting some cherry concentrate to help perk up the flavor of the bock, then returned home with enough time to make lunch for today and relax on the couch before passing out. A very filling, satisfying, exhausting, accomplishment heavy day. Ahhh, life is good
