*deep breath*
After working on this thing for about a week now, I don't believe that anything more can be done to it. So, fellow Sorkinettes, here is my post-administration CJ/Danny story.
In Loco Parentis
Disclaimer: CJ Cregg and Danny Concannon belong to Aaron Sorkin. Their baby belongs to John Wells and Co. I’m just trying my hand at dabbling in Sorkinese.
A/N: I’m not married and have never been pregnant, so any appearance of experience on either of those two things comes from reading fanfiction, listening to my parents, and, in this case, watching how Allison Janney and Timothy Busfield interact.
Also, here is a shout out to my beta,
fitzette. Thank you so much, Jenn!
Early morning Santa Monica sunshine cast shadows on the walls and gave the room soft, pale light. Surrounded by all sorts of pillows, CJ Cregg slept on, enjoying the warmth, the peace, and the quiet. It was going to be a great day, she thought in semi-consciousness. Somewhere beside her, in the midst of her many pillows, she felt Danny shift. On the bedside table, his cell phone alarm went off.
CJ burrowed her head into the nearest pillow. It was going to be a nice day.
Danny turned off the alarm quickly, and a glimmer of hope caught CJ. Maybe he would just go directly to shower this morning. Perhaps there was a slight possibility that just maybe, he wouldn’t -
CJ heard the television set click on and turn to CNN as the opening music heralded a headlines check. Groaning, she pulled the blanket over her head, as the oblivious Danny turned up the volume to the rustling of the sheets.
The bed shifted as Danny got out. CJ listened involuntarily to the opening and closing of dresser drawers, the blaring of the television, and the creaking of the bathroom door. Though the soft pitter-patter of the shower was far more comforting in comparison, she was still quite disgruntled as she opened her eyes underneath the sheets.
For a few moments, CJ groped around in the half-light for the remote. She switched off the TV, and then stared at the ceiling, watching shadows. Giving up on sleep, she sat up and rolled her eyes in the general direction of the bathroom. Placing a hand on her very round abdomen, she told her unborn daughter, “I love your father. I really do.” She heard the shower go off and sighed. Rubbing the spot where her baby was growing, CJ thought for a minute. “But he can be a real pain in the ass, sometimes,” she remarked.
“Don’t swear in front of Flamingo Jr.” Danny had emerged from the shower, fastening his suspenders and looking half-indignant, half-amused. “Also, I resemble that remark.”
CJ rolled her eyes, but she was fighting a smile. “You woke me up again,” she reminded him.
“Technically, that was the TV. Or possibly our daughter.”
“No, she’s still asleep.”
“I’m raising her to be a morning person, so she can keep me company when I watch the news.”
“It’s not working very well. You’re turning me into the morning person - the very reluctant morning person. One of those people.”
“CJ, however tired you may be, I think you’re going to forgive me in a couple minutes.”
“Just why is that, Fishboy?”
“Because you’re in love with me, and you married me. Also because I’m making you waffles.”
At this, CJ slid out of bed and walked over to him as gracefully as possible. “Hey Danny?” she said softly, putting her hands on either side of his face, idly running one through his beard.
“Yeah?” he asked in an equally soft voice.
She brought her face closer to his, and then whispered, “I’m going to go feed Gail.”
Leaving him standing there, looking vaguely confused, CJ fought to keep from laughing as she swept past him and opened their bedroom door.
“Okay,” she heard Danny say, sounding a little dazed.
“Brush your teeth, Danny,” she laughed, and she headed down the hallway to her office, and in it, Gail’s bowl.
“I think we’re going to have a lot of fun teasing Daddy today,” CJ told her unborn daughter, grinning. She rummaged around in a drawer for fish food, and then sprinkled it into the water. Gail flitted through miniature palm trees and the more recent addition of a tiny baby’s crib. As CJ went to put away the little container, she bumped her computer, and the screen flickered and came on.
Blinking back tears, she looked at the completely new computer wallpaper. Danny’s arms slid around her waist from behind, coming to rest on the roundness that was their daughter, growing within.
“You like it? I scanned it yesterday right after we got back from the hospital.”
CJ nodded, and, not caring about morning breath, kissed him quickly. For a few minutes, they stood in silence, standing there with their arms about each other, thinking about what was to come so soon, as Gail swam in her bowl on the desk beside them.
CJ gently broke the embrace, threading her fingers through his. “I’m pregnant. Go make me my waffles.”
Danny grinned and stole a kiss before she could swat him away. “Okay.”
Thoughts? Comments? Feedback = love. Constructive criticism would also be helpful. I may be a young, impressionable (ha!) writer, but I want to improve as much as possible.
