“I told you, I’m perfectly fine!” Maia Namikaze warded off yet another hopeful away from her. What’s a girl got to do for a little peace and quiet around here? She shifted her bag in one shoulder and arranged the books in her arms. If she were still with her ex, there would be a personal assistant following her with her books, laptop and her hot Starbucks coffee. But since they broke up Maia didn’t have that luxury anymore.
She had forgotten how much things weigh. Her workset in one bag. Her purse in another, her bento, her sketch pad and magazines all weigh her tiny frame down as she made her way towards the courtyard where she promised to meet with her friend Hashimoto Taito and discuss their Fashion Runway project. She was late, actually and there was no way she would get there in one piece. In her rush, she slipped on one of the steps and ended up ungracefully at the bottom of the steps, with everything from her bags and arms strewn about her. She first checked the heel of her Charles and Kieth slip ons to find it snapped.
“Are you okay?” A half laughing guy came out of nowhere with an armful of her things.
“Do you think I’m okay, Nishikido?” Maia frowned. He was the last person whom she wanted to see her in this state. “My heels had snapped, my things are all over the place and I’m late.” She tried standing up but ended up squealing in pain and sitting back down. “Great and now, I have a sprain.”
“Nishikido Ryo picked up the shoes and studied them. He snapped off the heels of both shoes and placed them on her feet. “These things are impractical.” He said
“What do you think you’re doing? Those shoes cost me!” Maia glared at him as she watched him gather up most of her stuff and place them back into their bags.
“You shouldn’t be wearing them if you’re going to be running,” Ryo said plainly as he finished up packing her sketchbook. “I don’t understand girls and their heels. They’re expensive, painful to wear and simply a challenge to walk in.”
“Have you tried them on?” Maia frowned she was now in the middle of a text message to Taito who was probably wondering where in tarnations she was.
“Nope, they just look odd. Why do you need to be five inches off the ground for anyway?” He asked as he arranged her bags on his back and prepared to help her out.
“They are miracle shoes, they make womens legs look longer, more slender and more attractive to your species,” she said crossly. Taito was in fact waiting and she needed to get there fast.
Ryo shrugged and offered his hand to help her up. She was too engrossed in what she was doing that she didn’t realize that Ryo had already gotten her stuff together. She blinked up at him.
“Are you, or are you not in a hurry to get somewhere?” Ryo asked arms still extended towards her.
Maia took his hand and stood up. She braced herself on his shoulder and then smiled. “Thanks.”
“Where to Princess?” Ryo asked his arm firmly planted on her waist to support her.
“The courtyard,” She smiled as they took off slowly towards the meeting place. They walked in silence for a while concentrating on the road ahead. People parted as they passed giving way to the injured. Ryo was lost in thought about Maia’s presence next to him. She smelled so good. He thanked his lucky stars that he had not gone home yet for the day.
Maia too, was trying to distract herself from the fact that she was this close to him. She stole small glances at his sun kissed face and couldn’t help but scold her heart that did a little backflip when he caught her eye and smiled. To distract her from him she cleared her throat and said the first thing that came to her mind.
“Your hands are rough,” She commented and then kicked herself mentally when she said it.
“Yours are soft,” Ryo smiled apologetically. “I work at a farm remember. Sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Maia said in a hurry. “I just noticed it. My Dad’s hands were rough too. I have always thought that rough hands were mark of a real man. It means that they’ve been through a lot and that they have had hard work.”
“Oh,” Ryo tried hard not to smile too much after hearing that. “Was Daigo’s hands rough?”
“No,” Maia cocked her head towards him. “His was smooth as a baby’s bottom. He has much to learn. Your hands though, show me that you’re at a level he can’t ever reach. I like that.”
“Thanks, I think,” Ryo said as they rounded the corner and approached the courtyard where she was flocked by her friends who asked her what happened. All talk about hands was forgotten. He put her things down next to her and smiled politely at her friends.
She looked up to him and nodded. “Ryo, thanks so much!”
“Anytime,” he returned and turned away. Looking at his hands happily as he walked towards the direction of No Border bar.
Meanwhile, Maia watched his retreating back and smiled. She didn’t even notice that Hashimoto Taito was already next to her watching Ryo as well.
“So?” Taito broke the silence and Maia snapped back to reality.
“So what?” she said feigning innocence.
“Wasn’t that Nishikido from No Border?” Taito asked her staring at her blushing face as she got her things ready.
“Yeah, I got a sprain, he helped me end of story,” Maia said as a grin spread across her face. She could never hide anything from Taito.
“How was he?” Taito urged on as he poked her nose.
“He has rough hands,” Maia finally said and laughed at her friend.
“Tres Bien, he’s a real man,” Taito grinned satisfied as they started their work.
“Anytime, Maia?
