“Ow, my freaking head,” Akanishi Jin blinked his eyes wide open. Why does it feel like someone was playing bongos with his head? He coughed and rolled over to check the time. His iPhone said that it was already 9:00 AM, July 27, 2011. Wednesday. The day when they were supposed to punish the Meiji Green Prowlers and send them home crying to their mommies, but he didn’t feel like it. In fact, all he felt like was to crawl back under the covers and sleep. Maybe just another five minutes. It wouldn’t hurt to sleep just a few minutes more.
The few minutes stretched to a few hours and soon Jin woke up to a ringing phone. He rolled over again, inwardly cursing the person who called him. He only wanted five minutes. “Hello?” He answered sleepily. This better be good.
“Captain! Where are you?” The panicked voice of Ikuta Toma, the aspiring Co-Captain asked as he looked around the stands wishing for signs of Jin to come out of hiding. “The game will start in half an hour! Ossan has already briefed the men, just get here!”
“… what are you talking about, Toma-babe, it isn’t for a few hours…” Jin checked his alarm clock which he found blinking at him in bright red LED lights. It read 3:30 PM. His five minutes had extended for more than he thought. He bolted up and felt blood rush to his head. It hurt him but he managed to spit out an answer. “I’ll be there in ten.”
Jin managed to stand up. As soon as he did, the room started to spin. God, he had overslept so bad. He knew he would pay for this. As quickly as his heavy body allowed him to, he gathered his uniform, cleats, keys and wallet and headed out to the field. It was showtime. He got to the locker room just as Coach Gussan got into the locker for a pep talk.
“Jin, get changed. I don’t know how you could forget about the game today but you better be in tip top shape and ready to rumble,” He growled at Jin. His hate for the Prowlers was more than anyone could imagine, especially since he learned that Tsuyoshi Domoto, his former Rival is now coaching it.
“Yes, coach!” Jin hurriedly put on his uniform. He felt a little woozy, but that’s what oversleeping does to him. How could he have overslept at a time like this? He listened in to the coach as he put on his cleats. He has to focus, focus, focus. He would never forgive himself if they lose today’s match.
The boys were ready and soon Jin joined them jogging lightly to warm himself up. “Sorry, Subaru,”he said to his co-captain who looked at him with a concerned face.
“You don’t look too well, Jin,” Shibutani Subaru commented in his other worldly way. “You should sit this one out.”
“And miss the chance to pummel Meiji? Not a chance!” Jin beamed at him, though he had an odd feeling that Subaru was right. “I’m alright!”
“If you’re not, I’ll cover for you,” Ikuta Toma said with a cheerful smile putting an arm around Jin’s shoulders.
“Not you, Toma-babe,” Shirota Yuu said with his best friend Hayami Mokomichi in tow. “ Us, Me and Hayami would take care of the bastards. You concentrate on getting the ball to the goal.”
“And me will protect our fortress! Junno will be like Gandalf and go ‘YOU SHALL NOT PASS’” Junnosuke Taguchi bounced up next to them. Though a peek at Jin made him worry. Jin does look a little pale.
Jin smiled his best Captain smile and faced the troops. “Then, we’ll go with that energy. It’s time to send the prowlers crawling back to their mommies!”
“YEAH!” The whole team cheered and then started to move together. “BLUE LIGHTNINGS POWER ACTIVATE!”
“I could never understand that,” Daigo Naito shook his head as he passed. He was their benefactor of the team. “Alright, if you win, I’ll put another computer in the locker room and we get to eat out in Ginza for Yakiniku.” This announcement was greeted by cheers from the team.
“And if we lose?” Yabu Kouta, Daigo’s self appointed little brother asked.
“You’re going to have to do the Devil’s course DAIGO SPECIAL for the whole week,” Daigo winked, which sent chills down their spines.
“Good luck guys,” Maia Namikaze said as she followed Daigo to the VIP seats. She paused to pat Junno’s cheeks before she went.
“Now, I have POWER!!” Junno roared. “The Goddess of Victory has smiled upon us!” He said melodramatically before they ran out into the field when they announced the team names.
“Junno nii! Don’t run out without your gloves!” Idda Namikaze, one of the team’s managers said running after him.
Jin hung back. He felt a little weak. He really should eat something. But his name was called and he ran out into the field. Food can wait. He needs to win this first.
The game was a close one. The Blue Lightnings never showed mercy on the Green Prowlers as they set on the field. Jin ran with the ball and kicked it towards Yabu Kouta who was surprised. The Captain who usually hogs the scoring balls was passing a lot today. Jin was hanging back. Giving chances to the younger members who accepted it gratefully. Junnosuke Taguchi watched the Captain from his spot at the goal post and frowned. Jin wasn’t himself today.
At half-time the score was 3-2, Prowlers leading by one. Junno frowned. He shouldn’t be distracted by Jin coughing on the field, but he couldn’t help it. Jin was sick. He shouldn’t be out there.
“What was that all about, Junno?” Jin glared at the goalie who looked apologetic, but instead of apologizing the goalie asked him a question.
“Jin, are you feeling well?” he asked.
“I am fine, before you worry about me, you worry about balls getting into the goal,” Jin scolded him and glared. He actually didn’t feel fine at all. He was freezing. He felt weak. He wanted to just sleep. He felt like he was burning up.
“Alright, but I think it’s beter if you let Toma call the shots later. Take five minutes.,” Junno suggested as he drank some gatorade.
“Fine,” Jin said shortly. “Toma, lead us up. I’ll take a fiver here. Idda, do you have a banana?”
Idda nodded and handed the captain the fruit. She too had wondered what was going on. Jin was unusually quiet on the field. He was also not flirting with the crowd. He looked wasted and tired.
“Have you guys seen Mama on the bleachers?” Jin looked up to the stands where Resha Namikaze used to sit. But she wasn’t there and it made him feel even worse.
“Oh she’s here, she’s sitting just above Meiji’s bench with Student Body President Koyama,” Haruka reported and pointed to the opposite side.
True enough, Haruka’s report was accurate. Resha was there, sitting hands folded beside a thin guy with glasses wearing a green dress. Jin’s eyes narrowed.
“THEY. STOLE. MAMA!” Jin hollered. “Toma, you have to score at least three against these thieving kidnappers.”
“Hai, Captain,” Ikuta Toma grinned. “Consider it done.”
“Best scorers of the day and highest stats will get an extra skip day,” Jin said as the Lightnings cheered on in delight. An extra skip of practice meant that they could get more dates in.
“Yabu, I’m counting on you to steal,” Jin said in his most serious voice. “Those bastards stole Mama. We should avenge her.”
“Technically, Resha chose to be there,” Daigo said in a cool voice above them. Jin’s logic was seriously flawed but if it got the team to win, he doesnt complain. “You should prove to Mama that yo’re a better team. Steal her back, guys.”
Half-time was done and Jin sat back and closed his eyes. This was ridiculous. His face felt warm and he wanted to hide. But the anger he felt at Meiji surged him on. When his five minute break was done, he was back on the field directing and making plays furiously. He will have to get Mama back even if it’s the last thing he does. And seriously, it felt that way.
Meanwhile, Resha frowned. Jin was sweating excessively and the odd way he played wasn’t like what he practiced. She stared at him. His face was flushed. Instincts told her that he shouldn’t be on the field, let alone out of bed. But Jin’s face was determined and when it comes to that, it always ends up in a win.
Resha sighed as she flipped open her cellular phone once again and checked her messages.
Traitor. Jin’s sick and you’re there with the enemy.
The message from Maia-nee had confirmed her thoughts.
Why is he even playing? She texted back.
A reply came soon. Care to stop him? The Lightnings will top your Prowlers. I still don’t like Kei.
Resha rolled her eyes. It wasn’t her fault that she was wearing green. She wasn’t even supposed to be at the game. If only Keii wasn’t needed by the team, they would have been far away from here. Now here sisters were calling her a traitor (and she certainly felt like it).
The final minutes of the game drew near. Junno miraculously saved a ball kicked by the team’s Ace player and the crowd went wild. The team was playing exceptionally well today and more players have been making scores. The current score now is 5-7 Lightnings lead. A few more minutes, just three more minutes and the game was over.
Jin looked at the clock and panted. He was going to die. But that wasn’t enough. He wanted to show the Prowlers how the Lightnings strike when they’re mad. He cheered on as Shirota Yuu kicked the ball hard into the waiting hands of Hayami Mokomichi who didn’t even need a signal to pass it to Mizushima Hiro who scored. The giant trio had scored them another point.
Jin paused from running, sweat flew from every part of his body. He felt cold now, but he had to wait. One last minute. Yabu stole the ball and was now heading furiously towards the goal. With a furious kick, the ball landed in just as the buzzer sounded. It was in and the final score was 5-9. Lightnings won. Jin sighed and closed his eyes. They won. That’s all that matters. He didn’t even realize that he was falling. Jin had blacked out.
The cheers of the team and the crowd was cut short as they saw their captain fall to the ground. Junnosuke Taguchi who was watching from his post, ran up to him and caught him just before he hit the ground. Jin was running a very high fever. He knew it. “COACH!”
The Coach, Daigo, Maia, Idda a few others were rushing up to help. But none was faster than Resha Namikaze who was there in a flash. She knelt to the ground ignoring the mud that splashed on her brand new green floral dress and gladiator heels. She reached for Jin’s head and placed it on her knees feeling the heat eminate from his pale skin.
“How did you let him play like this?” Resha’s eyes flashed demanding an answer from the coach who shrugged.
“He was late! I didn’t even know he was sick,” Coach Gussan said as the stretcher arrived.
“Let’s get him to the clinic,” Maia said as Shirota Yuu and Hayami Mokomichi carried him. “I texted Sarah. She’s getting ready for him.”
Resha nodded and followed the stretcher, leaving her boyfriend forgotten on the Meiji bench.
A few hours later, Jin stirred from his sleep. Resha looked down at Jin who opened his eyes.
“Mama,” He finally said weakly. “You’re back… you were kidnapped by the prowlers. It worked, you’re back.”
“Congratulations, Capt. Jin,” Resha smiled at him. “And for your information, I wasn’t kidnapped.”
“You traded me for the stick?” Jin pouted.
“He’s not a stick. He’s my boyfriend,” Resha laughed and put down a bowl of oyaku in front of her. “You probably haven’t eaten since yesterday right? So be a good boy and open up.”
Jin obeyed and allowed himself to be fed. Halfway through the bowl, Jin too Resha’s hands in his.
“What? Are you full?” Resha asked blinking.
Jin shook his head and then raised both hands to his lips. The caring hands that fed him and take care of him. How could he live without her? “Thank you, mama.”
Resha smiled. “It’s okay Jin. I’ll always be here for you.”
Jin nodded. For now, he satisfied himself in her care. After he gets better, he has to make sure that Mama will never leave him and the lightnings again.
