Douchey Moments in History

Welcome to another edition of Douchey Moments in History!

"I think I need a break."
To me, what Noah does here is just seriously fucked up. (I'm linking to a part a few minutes in to the clip here. Noah is actually obnoxious even before this, so I recommend watching the whole clip, but this part that I've linked to strikes me as the douchiest.) It ( Read more... )

Great post!

The kind of mixed behavior we see here, where Noah offers his love and affection with one hand before immediately snatching it away with the other, is exactly what makes his relationship with Luke so toxic.

Yep, yep, yep. And awww, Luke's little "You don't want to be with me anymore?" And Noah's response is to yell that HE NEEDS TO THINK AND HE CAN'T DO THAT WITH LUKE HERE. GOD, WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND, LUKE??

"I need a break from this."

OMG PLZ GO FUCK YOURSELF, NOAH. Luke deserves so, SO much better. Look, I get being upset and maybe needing a few days to chill alone and think, but sheesh. As usual, Noah's the one with all the control here.

It's not a "break up," so they're still committed to each other, but that "commitment" doesn't include silly little things like doing things together or spending time together or even talking to each other

LOOK, IT ALL MAKES SENSE TO NOAH, OKAY. It's like when Luke asked earlier this year what they were to each other, and Noah was all, We're friends! Uh, when the guy you've been in a relationship with for two years says you're friends? He's already broken up with you -- he just didn't have the balls to tell you.

Again we see that Noah just expects Luke to be waiting for him once Noah has gotten suffient space. No one's breaking up? Right, but everything is on Noah's terms. Even though it's a defacto break-up, Noah's the one who gets to decide when it's official. Or, as he did with the blindness, he acts like they're broken up and forces Luke into being the one to make it official.

I wish Luke had realized how important what he says at 8:33 is. Because no, Noah never really did want Luke. He wanted an idealized version of Luke, and Luke could never, ever measure up.

Also, LORD, the overacting going on in that scene! Van was so, SO much better acting against Eric. Much less YELLING LIKE HE'S TRAPPED IN HARRY POTTER BOOK FIVE.

Luke is the type of person who, once he decides he cares about someone, he will fight tooth and nail to see the good in them and to turn a blind eye to the bad in them, until that "bad" gets SO BAD that he no longer has any choice but to see it.

Yep. Oh, Luke. I just love him and his big heart SO MUCH. And of course, Noah's all, It's not the same. Right, because nothing else can be as bad as what NOAH went through. NOAH'S father-related pain is so much worse. Because it's HIS. (Sidenote: Worst fake crying ever, Y/Y? Yikes.)

Instead he offers Luke the "carrot" of thinking they are making up and getting back together, only to almost immediately snatch it away and beat him with the "stick" of "I can't even think about making love with you because I'm joining the army." It's just another example of how it's all about what Noah wants, without any consideration for how his actions affect anyone else.

YES, YES, YES. UGH.

Noah was quite annoyed that Luke would dare to make those kinds of decisions without discussing it with him.

Same with running for the student election! Noah was super pissed that Luke didn't ask him first, and Luke bent over backwards apologizing and he said he wouldn't do it unless Noah said it was okay. WTF? He's not your keeper, Luke! I mean, it's student government. Not exactly a life-altering position to take on.

Meanwhile, Noah just tells Luke about major life decisions and always says that they're not about Luke when Luke gets upset. Marrying Ameera or joining the army had nothing to do with Luke! Why was Luke so upset, geez! SO UNREASONABLE. Can't he see that it's not about him?

Well, yes, he can. And that's the whole point, Noah!

OMG, the way he says that just breaks my heart. There are some points in these scenes with his royal douchiness where Van was just trying too hard to compensate for the fact that he was acting opposite a block of wood, and he'd come across as just a tad too histrionic, but not here. He so totally nailed the delivery of that line, and I could just feel his heartbreak.

No, see the problem is that "they" weren't broken up. Noah was broken up with Luke, but Luke was still obligated to consider himself committed to Noah, and to be there waiting whenever Noah decided he wanted to come back. Noah never really considered Luke his boyfriend, Luke was a fucking TOY, and anytime Noah felt like it, he could put that toy away in the toy box, and play with any other toy he wanted, but that toy damned well better still be there the next time he decides he wants to take it out and play with it again.
