Douchey Moments in History

Welcome to another edition of Douchey Moments in History!

"This is my... Luke Snyder"
This is only a minorly douchey moment, in the sense of it not being outright mean or cruel or anything, but IMO it really illustrates something about Noah's character. Luke had moments earlier stood up to Noah's father and declared that he loved Noah. When Noah ( Read more... )

this is definitely a case of Noah thinking only about himself and what he wants without any consideration for the people whose lives might be disrupted (or possibly ruined) just to make him feel better about himself.

Totally! It really is striking to see the clips on the heels of each other, and looking back with a more critical eye.

Gee, why does that sound familiar? Wasn't there someone else fairly recently who acted like a total asshat, later admitted he'd been acting that way, but never actually apologized? Who could I be thinking of?)

Mmm. Who could it be??

And the fact that Noah kept pressing the idea and laying on a guilt trip until he got Luke to agree to go along with it, despite the fact that the idea was clearly distressing to Luke, just makes it that much douchier.

The thing that makes it extra crispy douchey for me is that Luke and Noah could not get married themselves, and watching Noah, all smiles, marry a woman, was just extra salt in the wound. And how the Snyders were almost acting like it was a real wedding ( ... )

And how the Snyders were almost acting like it was a real wedding day. Gah.I get why the fact that they can't legally get married themselves might make it worse for you, but that part doesn't really bother me. I mean, I just think of it like, if Luke was a girl and Noah was his boyfriend... or if they lived in Canada or Spain or something, where they could get legally married ... and the rest of the story was all the same, I can't imagine I'd be any less pissed off at Noah for doing it. But the way Luke's whole family seemed to be celebrating it like it was a real marriage? That was all kinds of fucked up. I could see them all acting that way if they had been doing the big public wedding and reception kind of thing, to put on a show for the government, but with the small, private wedding at the farm, and just family at the "reception", there shouldn' ( ... )

Oh, me neither. But the fact that Luke can't get married to the person he loves was an extra cherry on top of the suck sundae.

The big deal they made about making sure Ameera had a pretty dress, and that they had the right kinds of food for a traditional Iranian wedding and all that junk really did make me a little sick.

That's the thing -- everyone's going out of their way, acting like it's Ameera's actual wedding day, while Luke is just standing there hurting.

they make me wonder if the writers actually thought what Noah was doing was something good and noble and wonderful, and/or that Luke was being petty to feel upset about it.

I think they totally intended for Noah to come across as a noble hero, absolutely.

Like asking someone to go in the closet and keep his most important relationship a secret from the world is all just fine and dandy?

Sure would explain a LOT, wouldn't it?

I think that is probably the biggest reason of all why I hate Noah so much. I mean, if he was supposed to be a scumbag, then it might have been fun watching him be a scumbag. But the impression I get that Noah was supposed to come across as this great guy was was all kinds of sweet and wonderful and was such a good boyfriend, when he was actually coming across as a scumbag, just makes me hate him even more.

It didn't make sense that Luke's ENTIRE family was "supportive" of the fake marriage.Yeah, I agree, it makes no sense. All of it, including how incredibly douchey Noah was, all comes down to crappy writing. It was like, they made the decision that they had to throw roadblocks between Luke and Noah, and once they came up with "Noah could get married" they just didn't put any more thought into it. And I can think of ways that they could have made it a good story. Like I might have been more understanding and accepting of Noah's determination to help Ameera if she was someone he actually knew. And Luke's family should have shown a lot more concern with how it was all affecting Luke and a lot less concern with making sure that a woman they barely knew had a happy fake-wedding day. There were just a lot of points in the story (and in most of the stories of the last three years or so) where I felt like the writers decided they wanted to get to a particular destination and put almost no thought into what steps they needed to get there in a ( ... )

I definitely feel like everyone was way more concerned about Ameera's feelings than Luke's! I mean, on one hand it's nice to try and make her feel welcome (while we all learn a heavy-handed Very Important Lesson about how Muslims aren't so different after all!), but IT WAS NOT HER REAL WEDDING DAY. Sheesh. Poor Luke.

I totally agree with this. The only small amount of benefit of the doubt I can give to Luke's family is that it seems like Luke tried really hard to hide from them how hard it all was for him. He tried to make it out like he and Noah had decided to help Ameera, when what really happened was that Noah decided and badgered Luke until Luke agreed to go along with it. It's still not right that Luke's family all acted like it was a real wedding and made such a big deal over it, but it's not quite as bad as it could have been if they had actually seen the full extent of how much the whole situation was upsetting Luke.
