So its been a while since i updated. i'm bored so i'm going to do a 'first week of classes' entry
Math, differential equations. Prof is just horrible. Bang-Yen Chen deserves every bit of his .64 rating on all MSU. Hes basically un-understandable. The class starts out much harder than any of the other calcs. I liked being eased into multivariate calc by learning how to find the length of a vector :P He actually collects HW which will be a pain in the butt. especially cause i dont have the book yet and am thus 3 assignments behind haha. Its a necessary evil though, as it will probably help my grade
Comp Organization and Architecture. Same guy i took 232 with, and got a 2.0 :( Its funny because the class was very interesting and i thought i did well on the exam i failed. I hope he stopped putting both All of the above and None of the above on his tests. Doubtful. It has a weekly coding assignment like 231 and 232 which i always put off till the last night and do badly with. I hate to say it but it will probably be worse this semester because i have 2 programming classes (both with weekly projects) plus math HW, plus weekly writings and a few big essays in IAH :(
Data Structures and Algorithms. I decided the prof isn't too bad. His real name is Juyoan Weng, but when he said it i thought he said "John Wayne" so thats what i always think about now. He has that very imperialistic Chinese accent where he ends every sentence with "H'OKAY!". Hes also really big on using some form of the phrase (i decided to spell it the way it would sound if he were saying it) "You wook fo Google, you fo'get semicolon, you disgrace MSU!". Replace forgetting a semicolon with similar stupid programming habits, and replace google with microsoft, IBM, etc. I think he used it 3 times in lecture on Thursday. The class also has weekly programming assignments and i'm not really sure what they'll be like since its more of an analysis class. Oh he also does this thing where he gets really into a topic and gets high pitched and sounds like jar-jar binks.
IAH, Self Society and Technology. Lots of work, weekly writings, essays, online assignment garbage. I actually like the topic though. i talked more to my TA after class today than i've probably talked to any other prof ever. We had a discussion about whether we were techno-optimists or techno-pessimists. I rated myself a 9/10 (10 being optimistic) and to my surprise, i found myself arguing (class discussion style) against 3 or 4 people. The argument was basically that places like McDonalds and Walmart that sell low quality food for very cheap, should be ethically obligated to provide healthy meal options for cheap so low-income families can eat healty. I just dont see how people should expect companies to go against their business model, create products that will have smaller, or negative profit margins. Its not like McDonals claims to be a leader in healthy foods, and nobody is forcing people to buy their food in the first place. Yay capitalism!
Marketing. I haven't really gotten a good grip on this class yet. it seems really general (too general for my tastes) and the prof really uses the term 'marketing' loosely. The first two days have been all about marketing as an image-improvement motivator, which isn't wrong, but isn't the business angle i would have expected. The prof is a middle aged black guy who seems too eager to try and connect to 600 kids, but i realize that's much better than the opposite extreme.
Well thats about it. This semester will definitely be the most work i've ever had. actually like triple the work i've ever had in one semester. *sigh*. i actually like all my classes though so that'll be new.
