So, the update page was...updated. This spawned a lot of unhappy complaints in
lj_design (

here) and

here), and at least one "protest via boycott" attempt (
awaydayprotest).
However, for those of you interested in some hardcore explanations of the whys behind the user interface changes and why they are so difficult to do, there's a gem of a conversation in

rahaeli, supporters, and detractors. In summary, LiveJournal is used by its users for so many different things that one person's hindrance is another person's help, but the redesigns are happening because of problems detected by usability studies.
No dogpiling the conversation, please: I don't want anyone to consequently hate us and try to hide this level of discourse. If you have points or arguments, I request you make them here, since I'm positive we have the breadth and span of opinion among our members to have a lively discussion without zerg rushing someone else's journal. Nonmembers: yes, we try to unscreen your comments as they come, but if you end up having back and forth conversations, it might be expedient to request & gain membership, if only temporarily.
