Remember the
announcement about SUP in
lj_biz last October? SUP is a Russian company that LJ has contracted with to operate portions of LJ for Russian LJ users. As you guys probably remember, there was widespread suspicion about SUP and possible loss of privacy for Russian LJ users. LJ staff swore up and down that SUP use was opt-in only.
In
a recent comment to that post, several users commented that they were designated as SUP users on the
http://www.livejournal.com/admin/capedit.bml page -- even though they had not chosen SUP, and in one case had even received personal email from LJ staff reassuring the user that their LJ would not be administered by SUP.
Within four hours of the users posting screen caps from the capedit.bml page, access to that page was denied. It is therefore obvious that someone from LJ saw and reacted to this thread. However, there has been no response to these users on the thread from anyone connected to LJ.
The lack of response is, to my mind, the key element here. No explanation that what appeared to be a "SUP User" designation was actually something innocuous, which would have been great. No "OMG We screwed up!" apology, which would have been somewhat reassuring. Nope -- just a quick dirty scramble to hide access to the evidence.
Oh joy. MORE fodder for conspiracy theorists.
I wonder how SUP is doing?
