The Cupcake Crusade

Aug 16, 2007 22:39

My mother and I have similar work schedules. As opposed to Guy and Dad, who work in the early morning to mid-afternoon, Mom and I work from the early evening to the late evening.

When I'm not working with Dad in the mornings, Mom and I like to go out and do things.

Today, we went on a Cupcake Crusade of the Redmond-Seattle area.

My birthday is in 4 days, and I have decided that rather than a cake, I'd like to be uber-chic and get cupcakes for my family dinner. Of course, not all bakeries are to be trusted with such a momentous event! What if I get dry cake, or terrible frosting? That could ruin the entire moment! To decide which lucky bakery will be given such an honor (that'd be baking for my birthday), Mom and I tasted cupcakes at several cupcakeries.

Cupcake Bakery Numero Uno: the Fred Meyer Bakery.
Mom and I sampled a chocolate cupcake, topped with a layer of actual CHOCOLATE (yummers!) and a whipped buttercream frosting rose.

Unfortunately, once I realized that I had a spiffy new camera to document our Cupcake Crusade, this is all that was left of Mom's half of the cupcake:

It was all right. The cake was dry, but the frosting-cupcake ratio was magnificent (nearly 1:1), the chocolate shell was tasty, and the frosting itself was light and divine. I rated it a 7/10.

Mom and I continued our Crusade into Seattle, to Cupcake Royale.

Okay. So. Let me be the first to admit that I am totally sucked in by cutesy little quirks that small, privately-owned shops have. Like funny signs, and hilarious names for their wares.

The Milly Vanilly. Basically, this cupcake was taken straight out of my dreams. It looks delicious. But does it taste good?!

It's so lonesome. I should put it out of its misery. IN MY MOUTH.

Mom got the Mo'Fro. That'd be short for Mocha Frosting. She was mildly excited about it. And by mildly, I mean WILDLY. Silly Amy.

The Milly Vanilly was my dream cupcake. The cake was moist, with a noticeable vanilla flavour and delectable crumbly texture. The frosting was sweet, with the slightest additions of cherry flavouring.

The Mo'Fro was tasty, although I'm not a chocolate cake fan (unless we're talking chocolate ice cream cake, because I could eat several pounds of that... and I have). The frosting was tasty, the cake was moist. Just... if I'm going to eat something chocolatey, it might as well be a chocolate bar. Or chocolate fudge. Or chocolate body paint. (Kidding!)

So the moral of this story is: a crusade (and especially a Cupcake Crusade) can last for only two stores. Once you find your Mecca (the Milly Vanilly cupcake at Cupcake Royale), why would you continue your quest?

PS. If you feel the need to correct my very historically inaccurate references to anything religious, take your sentiments elsewhere. This entry was written in good humour, and I'd be delighted if everyone would read it as such.
