Today is awesome outside. I have to study, but I was thinking how nice it would be to walk around. I wish I didn't need a car. It's really nice to be able to walk from the drugstore, to school, to 4 different grocery stores (and be within 2 blocks of 6 if you count the Green Market), to the library, to a used record joint, and if you feel like it, you can walk a few blocks into the flatiron district and stalk nice clothes or shoes until they go on sale.
Which brings me to another curious point. I don't buy a lot of things, but I miss being able to wander into nice stores to just look at what's there. Stalking nice clothing is an art. A few months into the season is when things usually go on sale, and you can acquire some very pretty pieces with minimum effort. I can't do that here.
The only things in the area are awful discount shoe places where everything is made out of plastic (besides having bad, bad styling), Kohl's, which is a a store whose clothes - along with having a miserably bad fit - are mysteriously devoid of any natural fibers whatsoever, and Chinese food/wing/chili/pizza joints. Now, I love my Chinese food, wings, chili, and pizza, but for fuck's sake! I knew plenty of college kids who loved good Thai. The restuarant Spice was a HUUUUGE trend. And what about Indian? Baluchi's 50% off lunch special was totally kickass.
You know what it is? It's the fact that there's absolutely zero creativity. The food places on campus are miserable. They're all chains, fast-food chains to boot (minus the food coop which serves miserable felafel). If you eat on campus, it's like eating in a mall food court.
I have NO IDEA where to go to find clothes, good music, or good cheap food. There are so many things that feel like flat soda. Maybe it's just that I haven't completely adjusted yet. But on the other hand, I don't want to adjust if it means being like this. Whatever. I should be too busy to notice, but it's when I want a break that it becomes evident doing anything requires a whole song and dance. :-P
