I am decidedly re-in love with pop for reasons none other than accessibility, beat, vocal prowess of the singers, and holy crap lions, real brass lines!
Recently I heard a Christina Aguilera/Herbie Hancock collaboration, and as I drove and listened, I thought, "Damn, this woman has a voice." At first I wasn't even sure it was her because it was just clean singing. No crazy beats, no psychotic melisma or coluratura (sp?)... it was musical. Then I caught a performance on TV of one of her songs off the new album, and absolutely loved the beat and the brass line. It was a remake of Candyman. Yeah. Awesome for dancing, awesome for the gym.
Speaking of awesome for dancing/gym purposes, Justin Timberlake. SexyBack is unreal. I was hanging out with Lauren, Kim, and some others, and we were talking about that song. It's a strip club song. But damn, you want to be out there on the floor making a ho of yourself because it's that magnetic and funky.
So I might find a way to acquire that music along with some older Gogol Bordello, Kultur Shock, and maybe that Herbie Hancock cd, "Possibilities."
I'd be so psyched if actual musicianship crawled back into pop music. :)
In other news, if I ever get tired of biochemistry, I'm going to get into the fashion industry. Honestly, I think I'd kick ass at it. Here's why:
- Creativity + artistic. I'm both. When I do it regularly, I can nail composition, color, and textures.
- Good with hands. I built my own bed. I sewed canvas onto the edges of my Gpa's paintings to stretch them properly. Learned to knit. I can handle power tools so how hard can a sewing machine be? :-P
- Precision. I worked in a DNA nanotech lab. Nuff said.
- Discipline. I fought thru a shitload of things in school, in sports, in music, and I've gotten to a point in my life where failure doesn't scare me. I've failed, and guess what? The sun continues to rise every morning, set every evening, and the world continues to rotate.
- I like it. Hell, when I have to clean up, I can clean up like wo.
Anyway. I need a mattress pad.
