New and Old

I am glad at the weather is becoming nicer. I think winter is a lovely season, especially in Scotland, with the snow all over the ground. However, it means we can practice football outside. We went to an indoor pitch a few times, but it looks like it will be getting warmer from now on. I don’t mind dressing layers if we get to play outside.

Julia warned us all that we will get muddy when we start training in the spring, but she didn’t sound upset about it. I guess I’ll soon find out soon what it is like.

I wave as I see two other girls, Erin and Grace, coming from another path. They wave back and cross over to join me. It’s interesting that I don’t see these girls often, outside of football, I feel close to them, to a point. Not at all like how things are with Susan and Hannah. Or at least, not how things used to be. I sent owls to them, as well as Ginny and Katie and aside from an owl from Susan, I haven’t heard from any of them. I know they are probably busy and maybe they didn’t get the messages over the weekend, but I would have thought at least one of them would have answered.

I know they both have work and Hannah is married while Susan is seeing Ernie. However, they are my oldest friends and I do miss them.

Then there is Ginny and Katie. I really wish I could get to know Ginny better, since we are family. I’ll have to drop by her desk and suggest lunch in the near future. I haven’t seen Katie since she told me about her engagement, but she probably is busy too. With the engagement and I know her job has her working very odd days and hours.

However, I do hope to hear from all of them soon. It’s been too long.

“Jones!”

A shout pulls me from my thoughts just as a football comes flying at me. I step forward and let it hit my forehead, heading the ball is the proper term.

“Well done,” Erin compliments.

I smile back. “Thanks.”

We take our usual place where everyone puts their things using each other for balance as we pull on shin guards, socks and our cleats. Just as I finish tying my cleats, Annie comes up and uses my shoulder to keep balance as she pulls on her shin guards. She also tells a story about how one of her classmates, she goes City University London, fell asleep during class and how the professor scared him awake by slamming the desk. The student was so scared, he fell out of his chair. We all laugh and share stories about similar incidents as we stretch and warm up.

It’s nice to have new friends like these. I just hope to keep my old ones too.
