  1. How did you get into transcription?
Recorded meetings for the 2 projects I was admin. ass't. for at my last job, and transcribed the minutes. That was an occasional thing. When I was unemployed last year, I took some inspiration from boadiccea's successful stint as a transcriptionist, said "Hey, *I* can do that, too," and started looking for transcription work. Turns out HR Lady, who was in my business start-up class, just happened to need one, and I have a good ear for it -- it actually takes more coordination than you might think to turn spoken words into written.

  2. Where and how did you meet Prakriti?
Funny story. While she & I don't remember for sure whether we'd seen each other around clubs or parties before this, in 1997, Charon was giving me my first tattoo (one of her first, too, I believe, at least professionally speaking) down at Perforations. It was this one. Kriti kept wandering in and out of the booth, yelling, "Look! It's a flower-cooter!"

  3. Why Baltimore?
Because, when I moved back up this way from Florida in 2001, it was where I could afford to live. It also gave me some distance from what, prior to my move to Florida a year and a half before, had been a hyperactive social life, which I'd used to distract myself from problems that desperately needed my attention. I needed some distance so I could focus on pulling my life together.

  4. What is the Genesis of CoyoteBird?
Okay, this is a longish one, but you asked. >;) Some time in late 2001 or early 2002, a friend recommended Janice Cox's book, Natural Beauty for All Seasons. It has recipes for stuff like facials, homemade shampoo, scrubs, oils, mouthwash... You get the idea. As a result of some recipes in there, I started picking up essential oils, as well as trying to make stuff like lip balm. Picked up some coconut oil soap base at some point and started adding to it for my own use and for gifts, everybody loved it, I got more essential oils to try... Hmm. I'm trying to remember how I heard of Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore, and for the life of me I can't. But I applied for the course (basically an intensive start-your-own-business course, most of which consisted of teaching us how to write a detailed business plan), went through their screening, and got into the class. My original plan was to open a little hippy-dippy, artsy-fartsy crafts, clothing, & jewelry shop, but that proved to be far outside my means, so partway through the course we narrowed it down to the current scope, which is focusing on the bath products (and occasionally my masks and mehndi work). Stay tuned for more installments in the saga. >;)

  5. What draws you to Joseph Campbell?
Primarily his ideas on the hero cycle. I don't feel that it's the gospel; there are plenty of other schools of thought out there that I find equally interesting. But I like his views on symbolism in myth and legend, and how it applies to our own daily lives and struggles. Also, he clearly has faith, and just as clearly, a part of that is the thinking that we would all do better to have faith, of whatever type works best for us. To be a complete geek and quote "Serenity", it seems to me that his feeling on the matter is, as Book said, "I don't care what you believe -- just believe." And I hold very strongly to that. (Which reminds me, I need to dig out The Hero With a Thousand Faces and actually finish reading it. *sigh*)
