Welcome to the BBC Sherlock Fandom, OMG READ THIS Rec List, Part One

Jan 31, 2012 19:27

Currently at work waiting for information from a customer, which means:

a) I have time to kill

and

b) I have access to a functioning computating device that is capable of multitasking~! (I'm getting used to the iPad, and I do like some things about it, but it is not a computer replacement)

Further to these points:

c) I have also promised things to people, things that are nigh unto impossible to deliver when armed with only an iPad. (alternate explanation is I am LAZY)

a + b + c = Oh, hey, I should dostart that Sherlock rec post!

(for arminaa and thalialunacy)

You both like John/Sherlock, so I'll just focus on that for now. (LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU'RE READY FOR JOHN/EVERYONE ELSE, I HAVE LOTS OF THOSE TOO. AND MYSTRADE. AND SOME REALLY FUCKING AMAZING GEN AND HET AND KINKY THREESOMES AND ASEXY!AWESOME. ALSO SOME INCEST. i can't believe i just wrote that XD)

{...

I think this might be easier with themes next time? I think I've read most of the fandom, selecting favourites is HARD. Here's a few that I've reread enough to have sections burned into my skull}

-You're a Soldier, I'm a Warzone series by abundantlyqueer - Filled with BAMF!John (of which there can NEVER be enough), picks up after the cabbie incident in ASIP and gives a fractured portrait of a "hideously overqualified army medic" who's more infantry than support staff and the man who makes him feel as if something dangerous is about to happen. (in which Sherlock gets hot and bothered every time John does something badass and the author is kind enough to provide plenty of opportunity for our John to shine :D ) [NC-17, 3 stories, ~14K for all, First Time & Established]

-And Stand There at the Edge of my Affection by coloredink. THE LOVE LETTER FIC - sweet, schmoopy and funny, a bemused John gives Sherlock advice on how to write a proper love letter, drawing from his wealth of experience (mostly from elementary school). ADORABLE. [G, ~2600, First Time]

-Apotheosis by Mad_Maudlin - The BAMF!John fic of BAMF!John fics; in which John fakes his own death post-Reichenbach to hunt Moriarty down - Very much John-centric, there's still enough UST steeped in the narrative that it counts as pre-slash as well as hurts-so-good awesome. John gets his black belt in badass and plenty of opportunity to use it. The story spans three years and never loses the momentum; it reads very much like the spy thrillers I used to devour when I was a teenager, only with 100% more Doctor WHO references and Mycroft. [PG-13, 16.5K, pre-slash]

- Give Me The Quiet Things - by lady_t_220 - Amnesia fic, lots of UST and pining, but also a really well considered approach to how one might feel if they'd really forgotten everyone. Sherlock's strangeness (and brilliance) really works in his favour, as he seems to be the only one able to accept John as he is and not as he was. [NC-17, ~20K (a guess, I'm not quite anal enough to c/p all three parts into a word processor to get an accurate count... or am I? Oh, fuck it, I really am: 22.8 K according to Word. I need help), First-Time]

-Shadows on the Wall by AraSigyrn - My favourite Psychic!John AU (and yes, this fandom is so awesome that there are a couple of these floating around) wherein John knows within moments of meeting Sherlock that he's going to fall in love with him, but he's too distracted by the talking head in the fridge, pretending to be normal so Mycroft doesn't dissect him and saving Sherlock from himself to really do anything about it. ASIP AU [PG-13, 18K, pre-slash/first timey]

-Let You Kiss Me (So Sweet and So Soft) by out_there - the Sherlockian rom-com where John doesn't know why Sherlock keeps kissing him, but he's sure there's a perfectly logical (-ish) explanation for it, likely backed up by spreadsheets and such-like, but probably not because of... oh. Oh! the pining, oh! the angst, oh! the lovely, lovely prose <3 [PG, 8600, First Time]

-The World on his Wrist by bendingsignpost - Sci-Fi AU where a singular John exists in four universes and cycles between them every time he goes to sleep; very cleverly done and beautifully written -- the sense of time in this story is amazing and you wonder how John keeps sane. He's: a soldier in Afghanistan who's never been shot but can remember the rehab; an anonymous source for Sherlock in London though they've never met; a successful surgeon in a village who didn't get a chance to save Sherlock from himself in ASIP; and Sherlock's flatmate trying to keep apace with it all, all at once. He uses a system of watches to remind himself which universe he's in. (It sounds confusing, I know, but it's really not that bad and the author starts posting calendars ~chapter 3 to help you keep track) [PG, 31K, First Time]

-Lab Book by sam-storyteller - where it's Christmas Eve, John's picked up a thing or two about deduction and Sherlock did not just kiss him in the middle of the street in front of a police officer. One of these things is not true :D
(Favourite scene ever:

John knew it must be written all over his face, this revelation, because Sherlock closed his eyes for a second. "Is it really so terribly difficult to believe I care about you, John?"

John rolled onto his back. "Actually, it is."

"Oh. Good, then it's not just me." Sherlock sounded relieved.)
[R, ~5.5K, First Time]

Ok, that should get you started. thalialunacy, I'm assuming you've read The Paradox Series by wordstrings (I know arminaa has already) but if you haven't, you should really, really start there.

Hopefully these are new to you guys, anyway. I'll try to gather up some more next time I have a windfall of free time at work (or a new computer, whichever comes first!).

Happy reading!
