Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward (Mirvish Productions)
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a play that wasn’t a musical. So when the announcements for Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit’s run in Toronto came I jumped at the chance to purchase tickets. Who wouldn’t want to see a British play about a medium, séances and ghosts?
It all starts with Charles Condomin (Charles Edwards), a writer, inviting renowned medium Madam Arcati (Angela Lansbury) to his house to conduct a séance as part of research for his latest novel. During said séance, they inadvertently conjure up the ghost of the Charles’ late first wife Elvira (Jemima Rooper) but only he can see her much to the dismay of Ruth his second wife. Yet unbeknownst to everyone, something else is afoot. As tensions mount between the feuding wives, Ruth (Charlotte Parry) determines the non-corporeal Elvira wants her husband back any way she can. Through it all the maid Edith (Susan Louise O'Connor) provides much of the hilarious comedic relief. Mischief and mayhem abound in this dramedy to die for!
In addition, an abundance of special effect added to the paranormal ambiance and hijinks. Honestly, I didn’t want it to end which is a testament to how much I really enjoyed the play.
Mirvish’s 2015/2016 season looks promising with The Judas Kiss (starring Rupert Everett), Gaslight (more ghosts & a detective) and of course The Phantom of the Opera, Motown The Musical and Cinderella to name a few!
