Cpt. Nemo

My eye test revealed some good news this morning. The vision in my right eye is improving! Where I had about 35% of my vision previously, I now have close to 75%; that's more than double the amount. Needless to say, I'm a happy chappy.

But today is going from strength to strength. Arriving at work I checked my mail and discovered my two long awaited packages. The Universal Exception is now firmly in my possession, as are the music and cinema I picked up in Canberra. There seems to be a few more original essays from Zizek in the new instalment from editors Rex Butler and Scott Stephens. No Spinoza references in the index though, so I'm going to have to keep it at arm's length for the time being. The new Muse album isn't too horrid. I think they've followed Radiohead in creating a commercial album for our soulless era.

"But Niv, I have a soul," you say. Well, I'm sure if you think you do you may very well have a soul. But what of the language? Can a soul exist outside of language? What does a language give a soul? Soul... Anima... Psyche... Geist... Mind... Nous... Obviously psyche is separate from nomos (law), so I would dare to suggest that having a soul entwined with the law was what we had once upon a time. And now it's a danger because we've become so technologically advanced that we could fall into a spiritualist eugenics very quickly indeed given the suspension of ethics/mores that happens when one fetishes ideologically driven techno-scientific development.

And I guess that's why I fancy we're post-Althusserian. Because even the scientists are aware that there are agendas behind all their research, and research only happens when there is funding for it to take place.

In other circumstances now past, I noticed I didn't have a current copy of my chapter outlines on me this morning as I plotted my thesis' future formations. So I've printed two copies. Banal as this information is, it does signal that I've got my hand firmly back in the thetic pie of thesis-schmesisy goodness and ennui.

KA keeps directing me to Sufjan Stevens' cultural product. She does the whole obsessive thing very neatly.
