Today in my second-year class, they had to write short essays on "what do you want to be in the future?". So I'm walking around and then get to this girl that has a whole essay about how she likes Germany and wants to go there and is studying German. I was like, "Wait...you're...studying German?", to which she responds by pulling out a German textbook!!
JAPANESE KIDS STUDYING NON-MANDATORY FOREIGN LANGUAGES OUT OF SHEER SELF-MOTIVATED INTEREST??
It's a trap!! Of course I was suspicious! So I was like "...why do you like Germany so much?" and she, in typical Japanese middle school level English, replied that she thought it was "interesting". And then I saw the Hetalia pins on her pencil bag. And then I was like "Ah. ...>_>....is it because of Hetalia?" to which she nodded a bit sheepishly. I lol'd XD I think I may possibly have found the mystery "WEST <333"/America doodle girl. So cute! And now I have way more respect for Hetalia if it's making Japanese kids, who are generally uninterested in things outside of Japan, self-study other languages and cultures <3 I did write a note on her paper saying "English is also a Germanic language, please study it too!" haha. MAKE U.K. PROUD, I SAW HIS CHARACTER PIN ON YOUR BAG TOO.
Part 3 of my hunt for the Hetalia fangirls will come when I find out who drew the AMAZINGLY CUTE class announcement poster with China, Korea, and Japan on it!! XD
