I don't have long to write this, since I want to get back down to Hart Plaza for today's festivities, so I'll be brief.
DEMF this year is as awesome as it ever has been! Carl Cox spun a 3 hour set on the main stage last night that blew everyone away. Ech0 captured the footage with his new (to him) digital camera, so I'm sure that video and still images will be available shortly. Anyway, it was just so amazing. Whoever did the graphics on the screen behind Carl was amazing too. At one point, I saw something that looked almost exactly like Farbrausch's "Debris" (check the Daily Demoscene entries), except that it was clearly set in Detroit! Jaw dropping. Throughout the rest, there was a clear demoscene sensibility running through it; now that I think about it, I wonder how many others in that audiences of 20-30000 people realized that fact. (We need to do more to get the word out on the demoscene, and techno enthusiasts seem like a natural starting point.)
After the show, I returned to my usual parking garage to find that the gate had been left open, which meant that I didn't have to pay for parking. (Awesome!) I then got involved in some illegal obstruction of traffic (against my will) just barely in sight of of the 5-Oh. Some tricky driving ensued, and I managed to lose them in traffic.
Then it was on to the Detroit Techno Militia afterparty. DTM threw an old-school hotbox rave in two rooms at a gallery on Michigan Ave. (Protip guys: next time, don't use the Train Station as a landmark for your afterparty, it's a dark, totally unlit hulk, which is nearly impossible to find from MI Ave. at night.) I just cannot describe how cool it was to dance until 5am; I felt like I was back in the 1990s heyday of the Detroit rave scene. Apparently, I was one of the lucky ones who actually got in, there was a line of 150+ people outside most of the night!
I'll probably write more later as memories hit me, but for now, I need to grab some breakfast and head back out there!
demf,
